The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival (4/20/24)

4 20 24 c0ffee.jpg

*****

Good morning Horde. Before we get into the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters (Rulz for those of you in Kaukauna) to go over......

1) Open thread, so feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away until KT arrives with fresh thread goodness.
2) Be kind to one another and for the last time, no jumping off the couch.
3) No running with sharp objects when you jump off the couch which you aren't suppose to do.
4) Have a nice weekend.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

3/2 Reforger asked for prayers for his Coworker “D”, a widowed mom of 4 who is having a rough time with daughter #1. D’s daughter had to be incarcerated. She went nuts, trashed her room, broke things, and even kicked a cop. She could use a lot of prayers.
3/31 Update – Coworker D’s daughter is making pretty good headway. Jail really left an impression and she is not a fan of the ankle monitor and probation. No serious issues since, but she is still a little cray cray. No drugs tho.

2/29 – DaveT asks for prayers. We had prayed in the past for him, as he was trying to save his cats and his home from repossession (due to a relative who burdened the family home with debt). DaveT is over 65 and is not able to work much. The cats are elderly and one is blind, and the only family he has. Things had turned around and it looked like he was going to be fine last summer, but now a new judge is on the case and seems to want to kick DaveT and the cats out of the house. Please pray. If anyone wants to contribute, Annie’s Stew has the details of his GiveSendGo.
3/20 Update – The sham trial took place on 3/20. The judge would not allow DaveT to speak or give any evidence. He is still taking donations for a new appeal.

3/3 – Commissar of Plenty and Lysenkoism in Solidarity with the Struggle to maintain Moron standards asked for prayers as he is scared to death of some much-needed surgery. Pain, healing, iyiyi! Even the red tape involved in scheduling. Thank you all again!
4/10 Update – Recovering from diverticulitis surgery. It’s rough. Much pain, and there is talk of another surgery. He is miserable.

3/9 – RedMindBlueState asked for prayers for his dear friend who miscarried Wednesday. Again.
3/30 Update – Apologies from Annie, for guessing RedMindBlueState’s sex incorrectly. It has been corrected (above).

3/9 – Hadrian the Seventh asked for prayers for Her Majesty, who is having knee replacement surgery. He’d like prayers for a successful operation, but also an uneventful recovery. Her previous surgery in 2019 (on the other knee) was marked by great pain and the effect of the medication was terrible.
4/13 Update – Her Majesty is on a cane now and doing very well. The downside is that now she’s no longer bedridden, she’s going around the house finding things for me to do. She goes to physical therapy twice a week, which is exhausting, but she wants to drive the RV to Washington state in a couple of months for our National Specialty, so she’ll have to put in the work.

3/9 – Dr_No asked for prayers for his daughter, Megan. We had prayed for her in 2021, when she had cancer. Her cancer is still in remission, but she has blood clots in her lungs. She went to the local ER, where they said everything was normal. She sent a message to her PCP, to ask her to review the situation. She is still weak, and gets tired if a conversation lasts more than 1-2 sentences. Please pray that she be restored to full health. Thanks once again to the Horde for the help.
3/30 Update – Megan no longer has blood clots in her lungs, but she will need to be on Xarelto from now on. In the meantime, she developed shingles. Many thanks to the Horde for their words up for Megan. As of now, the colorectal cancer is two years + gone, the blood clots and under control, and shingles appears to be healing. The Horde is amazing.
4/13 Update – The shingles have passed the most painful point (the first two weeks), and she’s now mostly pain-free. The colon cancer is still in remission. Thanks so much for sending words up for her recovery.

3/16 PaleRider asked for prayers for wisdom and serenity for herself and siblings. Her father died on 3/15. Dad had been slowly fading away for 1.5 years, so it was not a big shock. She thinks that settling the estate will go smoothly, but prayers are welcome.
3/30 Update – Apologies from Annie, for guessing PaleRider’s sex incorrectly. It has been corrected (above).

3/20 – Inogame sent an update. We had prayed for him and his wife when they had trouble conceiving. On 3/19, about 8:30 pm, his wife went into labor… and before 10 pm she gave birth to a little girl in their bathroom, with a midwife on the phone assuring Inogame he wouldn’t drop the baby. He didn’t and Mom and baby are doing well, and prayers for their health are appreciated. In an unrelated prayer request, Inogame asks for prayers for a good friend from childhood is struggling with addiction. He checked into an in-patient facility for 30 days to save his job and hopefully his life. He is lost and needs help to find his way.

3/23 – Jewells would appreciate prayers for her niece, who is in the hospital for the second time in a week. She was diagnosed with pneumonia the first time, but still felt awful. She went back to ER, and they admitted her again. Her oxygen level was 76. She is the niece who is fighting cervical cancer.
4/13 Update – They suspended treatment for Jewells’ niece for 6 weeks and have her on oxygen. Her cancer is responding to the treatment, but at an awful price.

3/23 – Sock Monkey asks for prayers for his BIL, who we prayed for before, does have a cancerous mass on his spine. He spent 8 weeks in the hospital. He is walking with a walker and making significant progress. The battle plan is to start cancer treatments in mid-April.

3/23 – Fenelon Spoke needs prayers for Jessie, their “retired” organist. Jesse had fallen. Nothing was broken, but it is a setback for her and she is in pain.

3/23 – NR Pax asked for prayers. He is leaving his current job on 3/29 and starting a new one the following week. Please pray for the transition.
4/5 Update – So far, the transition to the new job is going well.

3/28 – Reforger asked for prayers for his wife, who is applying for a promotion. The new job would triple her salary.

3/30 – Danimal28 asked for prayers for Roberta and Jim, who were neighbors and friends. Jim went to the Pearly Gates. He was faithfully married for 60 years, a father of four successful kids, a veteran of active duty for 3 years just after the Korean War, and raised his family in South Chicago in the 50s and 60s. Danimal28 and he discussed history on a daily basis.

3/30 – rhennigantx requests prayers for his friend Carl, who died in his sleep. He knew him for 4 years and Carl always treated him like a long-lost friend. Also prayers for the family (which is as complicated as Father’s Day at a DEI meeting), for their pain and suffering.

3/30 – mindful webworker asked for prayers as he is going under the knife again for what will be a few hours’ surgery and maybe a week in the hospital. His surgeon used the word “mystery” three times while describing what they will be doing.
4/13 Update – After 3 intense hours, the surgeon packed out his pickaxe and jackhammer, weary but confident that he had removed all the cement-like crud blocking mindful webworker’s intestines. The next few months will be spent recovering and healing. After 9 inhospitable days, he is trying to adjust to home life. He’s asked MiladyJo to wake him every couple of hours to check his vital signs. Every day is a gift. Prayers for all in need.

3/30 – Polliwog the Ette posted that DOYLE had posted that his adult son had shared the troubles he was going through ,which left him shaken and in need of time to process. It sounds like they both could use some prayers.

3/30 – Jim in Kalifornia asked to add his sister to be added to the prayer list. She broke her arm/elbow 3 weeks ago. The first x-ray did not have the angle to properly see the damage, so now she is seeing an orthopedist who will recommend surgery. They will be re-attaching the ulna to the humerus.

3/30 – Fox2! Requested prayers for his great-nephew, J. He appears to have a severe case of Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), which is an allergy to food proteins. His appears to be grass related, which includes all grains, even if his mother eats them.

3/30 – Tonypete offered a prayer for the “mother of nine” who gave her ninth child the blessing of being adopted. May the biological mother come to a knowledge of the Lord’s saving grace.

4/1 – News from Washington Nearsider: His savings have expired and May's bills cannot yet be paid. Another custody hearing - to reevaluate the March 13 determination to give his ex full custody - has been scheduled for May 13th, so that's a date on the calendar towards which he has to work.
He has added one (1) client to his custom model aircraft list, and hopes to add several more, even though he can only work on one at a time. Having a known stream of income is better than not. You can contact Nearsider at washingtonnearsider at gee mail to learn about shipping and timelines or to discuss any details. Interested Morons can look at some small segment of his previous work by heading to this link: https://tinyurl.com/yzmucshu
On the job front, Nearsider had a promising interview, only to be told at the end that though his writing samples, resume, attitude, background, and presentation were all exceptional, his removal from federal service prevented any path forward. Nearsider explained the details leading up to his removal, and while the panel expressed their sympathies for his situation and their admiration at his courage, their position was unchanged. He suspects this employer was simply the first to be so direct, and that he's missed out on several other opportunities for the same reason.
Several contractors have contacted him in response to applications he's submitted and he's hoping at least one of them will be willing to focus on the writing, resume, attitude, background, and presentation vice the end of his federal career. As usual, more follows.
Since several people encouraged it, he has set up a GiveSendGo account. Please contact Annie for the details, if you wish to contribute.
4/8 Update – Washington Nearsider says “you’re all amazing, wonderful people”. He appreciates the support.

4/3 – Notsothoreau posted that Mrs. Salty (as in Mrs. NaClyDog) had a bad fall and broke four ribs. She tested positive for Covid, as well. Prayers for quick healing and that she is out of the hospital soon.
4/13 Update – Mrs. Salty is out of the hospital, recovering slowly. There is progress. She avoided the bogus Covid-19 Wuhan money grab in the hospital. She is a tad more independent. Occasionally she needs a non-skilled, uncoordinated, non-dancing or singing helper, whom TikTok would not show. They say thank you for all the prayers. They can testify to their effectiveness.

4/4 – J. J. Sefton could use prayers. Here was his posting:
“After suffering some sort of seizure back in February, while the initial MRI and spinal tap showed nothing, a subsequent MRI this past Friday evidently seems to indicate that I might have some sort of brain tumor/growth that would require immediate attention. As in surgery.
That said, on a positive note -- and I'm holding onto this bit of news as positive with all my might -- the medical neurology team and the surgical neurology team are apparently still reading the tea leaves to see what kind of surgery, if any, is required to deal with this. I am hoping against hope for that non-surgical option but am preparing myself as best as I can for whatever is to be.”

4/5 – Teej posted and asked for prayers for a Marine who is on hospice, with possibly two weeks left to live.

4/5 – Pipe asked for prayers for a dear friend who has lung cancer, who lives alone.

4/6 – MikeOxlong requested prayers for healing and that treatment goes well, He was diagnosed with stage 5 esophageal cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes and lungs. Traditional treatment doesn’t have a good answer, so he is taking non-traditional treatment in AZ.

4/6 – Grammie Winger posted that Rev had some tests done and he has a cracked sternum from their earlier car accident. They also found several nodules in his lungs, and an aortic aneurysm. Prayers appreciated.

4/6 – RedMindBlueState asked for prayers for an old and dear friend who just started chemo and is feeling it hard. And for the friend’s dog, who may need surgery soon.

4/6 – Paisley1333 gave an update. We had prayed for her trainer, who went through her third round of cancer in December. The trainer’s surgery was successful, and it appears they got all the cancer. While under the knife, she had a seizure (which she has daily), so the doctors got to experience that and changed her meds. This has been a huge help. So very good news and so grateful for all the prayers.

4/8 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her husband. He was stubborn and didn’t go to the doctor for about 5 days and has shingles. He is in pain.

4/10 – FortWorthMike updated the Horde. His MIL, who was going through cancer treatments, had miraculous results. The tumor is reduced so much, there is no sign of cancer. They won’t say cancer-free, but it’s just something to monitor now.

4/13 – NaughtyPine asked for prayers. There was a “psychic” who went on a murder-suicide rampage. A 9-year-old girl survived the attack, but her baby sister died in her arms. The surviving little girl needs prayers.

4/13 – Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd gave an update. His former son-in-law has died. It is something of a relief. He was an abusive, manipulative, drug-using alcoholic whose hobby was breaking into cars. He was well-known to law enforcement and the justice system. He had a remarkable capacity for wiping out wealth, either through outright theft or negligence. A.H. Lloyd’s daughter tried to leave him multiple times, but he was able to woo her back again and again. The last straw was when he used their tax refund for an Only Fans girl. The deceased is survived by his children, who he should have supported, but have been in A.H. Lloyd’s care for more than a year. Pray for the deceased if you like, but please pray for the children and their mother.

4/13 – Cybersmythe sent an update on his job search. He has received a formal offer of employment, for a job he thinks he wants. He appreciates all the kind thoughts and prayers.

4/13 – Nurse Ratched asked for prayers for her Marine, J, and his wife, M, who are having their wedding celebration on 4/13. They are sweet kids, respectful and kind to each other and would benefit greatly from the power of Horde prayers.

4/16 – Notsothoreau asked for prayers for a co-worker’s mentor and long time friend, DM, who has been diagnosed with throat cancer. Prayers for DM and also for his wife, that they would be strengthened and, God willing, that DM would be healed.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

Thank you Annie for your service.

"a move to another area with lower property taxes could potentially save homeowners thousands of dollars. "

That's the high quality advise you can expect if you subscribe to the paper for the low introductory price of $1 a month.

It almost seems as if the days aren't getting any warmer yet the nights are. Danger of frost long gone. Frost *could* return based on historical averages but seems unlikely.

31 Lots of good stuff on tap here at Chateau Lloyd. The memorial service for my ex-son-in-law will be tomorrow. I will not be attending, nor will my wife and the other daughters. The widow will, and is planning on bringing the children so they fully understand that their father isn't coming back.

There seems to be a sense of calmness descending on the household, and with the trees and flowers in bloom, it seems like a time of renewal. Clearly God's grace is at work. We are very blessed.

Indeed, there's an abundance of good things going on. My roto-tiller arrived, so I will be able to properly tend the garden this year.

Even better, today is the Green and White Game, the spring football scrimmage. Looking forward to seeing the new look of our team.

Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

And prayers up for all "our" politicians who have apparently decided that money and power are far more desirable than honor, let them see the error of their ways and repent!

If you haven't heard about Ole Miss' spring game and still have doubts on whether or not Lane Kiffin is a coaching genius, he turned theirs into a spectacle event with hot dog eating and dunking contests.

"That's silly" people might say. But the football quantity is already known, and this is just another practice/media event. And this way no one gets to wondering if they should enter the transfer portal that opens up immediately after the spring game.

44 In other faith-based news, a couple of interesting developments on the Catholic front. I might have mentioned this before, but Cardinal Fernandez has said that Pope Francis has not and will not speak *ex cathedra*, which means that nothing he has said carries with it "papal infallibility."

Several cardinals have made it clear that Francis' time is done and the Holy Father seems painfully aware that when he passes, all of this will be wiped away with a single decree.

The Coptic Church, which was thisclose to entering communion with Rome, clarified why it broke off the talks and laid out a pretty formidable challenge to the Pope, stating that future talks will take a theology-centric position.

Short version: the Copts are also waiting for him to go. Francis will not live to see the healing of this particular schism, and it's his own fault.

Their cheesecake can be purchased at Publix (freezer section). Some internet rumor states that the cheesecake can also be purchased at certain Costco's, but I haven't seen that to be true. If flying through NY, they can be purchased at LGA airport.

The reason why college football endures is that there is more to it than just a game. The bands, cheerleaders, weird local customs for touchdowns - all of that creates a sense of community.

When I go to Alumni Band, there is no politics, no factions, just memories and photos of families and friends. The paymasters of the game are trying mightily to wreck that, but they have continued to fail.

Michigan State has a new coach, a new look and everyone is excited to see what they look like.

79 I have an answered prayer I'd like to share, and a request. My dad passed away about 2 years ago, and his estate finally got settled. I had to get a lawyer involved as the relationship with my sister went way south after his death. I knew his estate would not be a windfall by any means, but I prayed that we would have enough to pay off our house.

Well, we finally got the check, and after all the numbers were final, the check had a $72.38 difference from what the payoff amount was. I use was because we paid off our house on Wednesday. God answered my prayer with exactly what we needed!

Now for the request, I would like prayers for my sister and our relationship. She has had a lot of trauma in her life that has led to some significant mental health issues that also manifest physically. I would love to rebuild our relationship, but I know I can't do it on my own. I just ask for prayers that our relationship will be restored.

Thanks, Horde!

84 I would like to thank people here for their prayers for Jessie. I saw her on Thursday and brought communion and we talked and prayed, and she is having less pain. Her nurse/companion/friend who is a lovely woman reported that they and another nurse took a trip to a some sort of bug museum-Jessie has always been interested in bugs-where they saw iridescent butterflies and Jessie petted a tarantula. I told Jessie that I bet they were thrilled that a woman in her nineties was able to make a trip down there and was so excited by everything they saw. She is going to write a card to the owner/director of the museum, and I said think that's wonderful. I think most people appreciate a nice handwritten card.

Personality will play a role on both ends. After Saban retired from Alabama it was disclosed that kids were coming there to play at a reduced NIL pay rate because they wanted to be coached by him. A Saban discount is how I heard it.

And you probably want as many of those types of really good to great players as you can get, because they're dedicated and coachable in a way that the elite players chasing a paycheck aren't.

There was a large dairy farm located west of Lewes, DE. It supported at least three separate herds, each in its own pasture and with its own feeding station and milking area. Then came the COOF fraud and now? Now all the herds, feeding stations, and milking equipment are gone.

The summer before last, fire hydrants were installed along the road that ran through the former dairy area. It is pretty clear what will come next -- megaplex "neighborhoods" with enormous homes possessing rooflines that are entirely too busy for their own good. Le sigh ...

I can't point him to passages and stories about God's love in the Hebrew Scriptures, but for the moment I told him to just "live in the psalms". If anyone has any suggestions for readings material related to the this topic please let me know. He might be more open to that than readings RC critiques to Bart Ehrman. Thanks

A few years back, the Spartans knocked off Ohio State and made it into the playoffs with teams built on overlooked recruits who were totally committed to the university. The fame went our heads, we started hiring mercs and the whole thing blew up in 2016.

The new coach is of that pattern. Oregon State has a tiny stadium and little money, so he just recruited local kids with promise, trained them up, used scheme over strength, and was able to beat powerhouses like Oregon and Washington.

One of his stated reasons for coming to Michigan State is that we have vastly more resources, but are very similar in mentality - the scrappy underdog surrounded by giants. I think he will be a much better fit than Mel Tucker, whose only good season was the result of a phenomenal running back carrying the team.

Maybe Scoop is a better option. Also funny. Proof that the media has been making crap up for a century.

The objective, by the way, is to break out of the current frame. Frontal assaults aren't working, so refuse to engage. Let him stew in his unbelief. There are probably other factors at work, so let them come to the forefront.

As for the wife, this is a cross for her to bear. God is trying to teach her something. What is it? Maybe this is a time for her to focus her faith inwardly, alone, and also to serve as a model of patience and kindness for the kids.

There's something deeper going on - he's not a truth-seeker, he's trying to argue his way out of some obligation. Let him argue with himself for a while.

Pope Francis recently declared the death penalty "inadmissible," kicking of a debate within the Church on both its morality and feasibility. Until 20 minutes ago, Church doctrine was clear - there are crimes for which the death penalty is required. This is clearly stated in Scripture.

There is also the practical necessity of keeping killers from killing again.

179 Sorry to hear that Washington Nearsider is having financial problems since loosing his job. Not to be flippant, but perhaps it is time to consider bankruptcy.

We had to do that almost 20 years ago when Mrs. Cop had a brain tumor that required surgery and radiation. Obviously, she couldn't work. At a certain point we just had to repudiate the credit card debt. After declaring bankruptcy, that gave us breathing-room to deal with medical expenses, cars and house payment.

Bankruptcy is not the end of the world. While it is misused by the financially irresponsible, bankruptcy exists for a reason.

Absolutely. One of the things that brought me to the Church was the fact that I had been a huge ancient history nerd, and so I knew how many errors, gaps and other problems there are with ancient texts.

I start looking at the Bible (and the writings of the Church Fathers) and I'm like "WHOA! This is documented in incredibly meticulous detail."

The double standard is just silly. You find a single Roman manuscript that says Titus went someplace, and welp, that must have happened. You find ten different accounts of Christ and all of them have to be "deconstructed."

192 Pope Francis recently declared the death penalty "inadmissible," kicking of a debate within the Church on both its morality and feasibility. Until 20 minutes ago, Church doctrine was clear - there are crimes for which the death penalty is required. This is clearly stated in Scripture.

There is also the practical necessity of keeping killers from killing again.

He (and other clerics like him) have also muddied-the-waters in regards to the fate of Judas Iscariot's soul. It has been settled dogma for 2000 years that Judas is in Hell -- not for betraying Jesus, but for despairing of God's forgiveness. I suspect that is due to a guilty conscience because the Catechism of the Council of Trent states that those who enter the priesthood due to unworthy motives are condemned to eternal perdition.

As a mackerel snapper [not a Papist, not for this clown anyway] I will say that we can find space for Ehrman's critique of the canon at the same time we appreciate the Real Presence at Mass.
Also we have the Apostolic Fathers, starting with Clement, although a bit wordy, being an excellent call to humility. And Ignatius' letters. Nobody doubts their authenticity, even Richard Carrier is saying Clement was writing 65 "CE".

You reveal the flaw in Sola Scriptura. If all we need is "the Bible alone", why are there thousands of Protestant denominations? That points towards the necessity of a source of authoritative interpretation.

The Catholic Church is not Pope Francis (there is no doubt in my mind that he will not be remembered fondly) or other Communists and homosexuals that were intentionally placed in the seminaries. They're dying-off and their tantrums display they're resentment of the younger, much more orthodox men that are now entering the priesthood.

229 There are a lot of protestant denominations because people are flawed. ALL people.
Because of this many use flawed hermeneutics to "interpret" God's word. Also read things into it that just aren't there.
Also murder people for translating His Word into a common language in order to keep all the "power over others" for themselves. That wasn't a protestant thing by the way. Nor was selling indulgences.

My Lord and Savior also spoke about placing man's traditions above God's Word.
His Word is the final authority, period.

Right, so when Latin was what everyone spoke and understood, that was what was used. When other languages became popular, new translations appeared. The problem you have is that "English" is relatively new. There are Gospels in all sorts of vernacular languages.

The Church has always tried to put scripture into the local language. One exception was in China, where the translators struggled because Mandarin is a symbolic language, and there was no clear analogue to God the Father. The solution they eventually came up with was to teach converts Latin because that allowed them to get into the new concepts along with the new language.

Protestant missionaries decided to forge ahead and inadvertently kicked off the Taiping Rebellion because a guy who found a tract decided he must be Jesus' big brother.

I meant to comment on this earlier. Yes, it can be a solution to financial distress. One can also negotiate directly with creditors to lower interest rates or even forgive a portion of the debt.

When I was unemployed, I sought credit counseling and that really opened my eyes. Telling unsecured creditors to piss off was quite satisfying. The reasonable ones locked my account, reduced the balance, put me on a payout plan and then declared the debt paid in full.

The unreasonable ones got 10 cents on the dollar.

Posted by: TeeJ at April 20, 2024 10:15 AM (71kwi)

Teej, "Latin" of the Roman empire was not the classical Latin, and it was definitely not a monolith. Late Empire Latin was full of local pidgins, accents and dialects. Hispania was considered to be "more Latin than Rome" in how it talked (and was considered stodgy), but in the North the combination with various Celtic languages was turning it into Occitanian and Welsh which added the problem of losing case endings and adoption of local words. On the Eastern side they spoke Koine, which was a common Greek patois, and most of the original books of the bible were written in some sort of Greek as well.

There are absolute truths, and immutable facts, but not in Linguistics or translations. The one thing of the Scripture is that it comes through all the translation, though.

To amplify on that point: The Deutocanonical Books came from the Septuagent (the Greek language translation of the Hebrew Bible being used in Alexandria) around 250 BC. There was a continuation of revelation to the Jews in Alexandria.
