She was of Huguenot extraction and her forebears emigrated to America from the Isle of Wight in 1710. The family also claimed to have Iroquois ancestry through her maternal grandmother. After an accident in 1921, age 67, complications set in and her leg was amputated leading to her death from gangrene the following month.
