Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their IPL 2024 league stage campaign with a defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) that saw the defending champions finish outside the top four due to a little inferior Net Run Rate (NRR).

After winning the title last season and holding a record of 12 playoffs in IPL history, a partially injury-hit Chennai Super Kings have failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third time in their 15 appearances in IPL.

Ahead of the 2024 IPL Auction, CSK had retained the core of the squad and had added well at the auction, but lost key player Devon Conway before the season started and also missed several players through injury during the course of the campaign.

CSK’s bowling attack was dented after injury to Matheesha Pathirana and Deepak Chahar. Also, Mahendra Singh Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad just a day ahead of the season-opener, hinting that 2024 could have been his final season.

Despite taking over captaincy, Gaikwad’s batting form was good, but few of his decisions as a captain have received criticism. However, CSK will back him as their captain for the next few seasons with Dhoni likely to have played his last game in the league.

IPL 2025 auction will be a mega auction like in 2022, when they had retained MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Gaikwad and Moeen Ali. Three of the four could still remain with the franchise.

Teams are reportedly being allowed only four retentions like the previous IPL Mega Auctions. However, there are also reports that the franchise owners have requested the BCCI to allow each team up to 8 retentions.

While there is no official confirmation on how many retentions will be allowed ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction, it is very likely that a minimum of 4 players can be retained by each team. Plus, there could also be a Right To Match (RTM) card available for every team.

If only 4 players are allowed to be retained, then CSK may not face a huge dilemma on who to release and retain ahead of the next auction as they look to assemble a squad that could see them challenging in the next few seasons.

Which 4 players may Chennai Super Kings retain ahead of IPL 2025 Auction?

There are several players who CSK would like to retain, but will be forced to release many ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction which could take place before the next season anywhere between December 2024 and February 2025.

If Dhoni is fit and is keen to play, it would be a no brainer for CSK to make him the first pick for retention, but he is very likely to remain with the franchise in a different capacity, allowing the team to be built around the new skipper.

Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain is likely to be the first retention for CSK. But who among the likes of Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, Devon Conway, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Matheesha Pathirana, Mitchell Santner and Tushar Deshpande among others will join the skipper in retention?

Ravindra Jadeja, who is a top all-rounder in the country despite a mixed run this season, is likely to be the next pick alongside Shivam Dube, who can single-handedly take the game away from the opposition, make up the three likely Indian players who may be retained by CSK before the next auction.

Chahar, Deshpande, Santner and several other stars may be looked at during the auction, while many players’ time at the franchise may have ended. Meanwhile, CSK may opt for a player who would be a challenge to buy at the auction for the remaining retention.
