The following story contains major spoilers for Blindspot‘s Season 3 finale. Proceed with caution.
The bad news for Blindspot‘s Jane Doe: Her memory’s been wiped. Again.
The good news for Blindspot‘s Jane Doe: Instead of waking up naked in a duffel bag, she came to in a hospital room this time, wearing a patient gown. Baby steps!
The NBC drama wrapped its third season Friday night with yet another game-changing episode, the final moments of which introduced Jane as a potential villain ahead of the series’ already-ordered fourth season. A brief recap of what went down:
Throughout the hour, Jane is repeatedly stopped in her tracks by awful headaches and overwhelming fatigue, which cause her to pass out on the job. She initially suspects she is pregnant, but a second collapse later in the episode reveals a much more sinister cause of Jane’s symptoms.
As Patterson explains to a heartbroken Weller, Jane’s body is being poisoned by ZIP, a memory-altering drug that Sandstorm flooded her with before she was shoved into that duffel bag three years ago. The longer ZIP is in Jane’s system, the worse her symptoms will become: It won’t just be the headaches and dizziness, but major memory lapses and potential brain aneurysms, too. Roman has tried to track down a cure — he’s been suffering from the ZIP poisoning, too — but Jane’s current odds of survival aren’t promising.
Jane then wakes up alone in her hospital bed, seemingly confused by the tattoos on her skin and the wedding band on her finger, among other things. She rushes to a payphone in the hospital’s hallway and makes a stunning call: “Hobbes, it’s me. It’s Remi. I’m in a hospital, and I’m missing time. I’m missing a lot of time. I need to talk to Oscar, or Roman, or Shepherd. From what I can tell, I’m still undercover with the FBI, but I can’t remember anything. I don’t know if I’ve been compromised. I need help.”
Moments later, Jane is brought into another recovery room, where Weller is clinging to life between surgeries — the result of a complication from a gunshot wound he had suffered earlier in the episode. She is greeted by the rest of the FBI team, none of whom seem to pick up on her strange behavior, and sits by Weller’s bedside. We see a quick flashback of Jane — er, Remi — talking to Shepherd at least three years ago, as they look at a board full of photos and intel about Weller & Co.
“Are you sure this will work?” Shepherd asks. “I’m positive,” Remi replies. “I’ll infiltrate their ranks, get them to trust me and then I’ll rip them apart from the inside.” We return to the present day, and Remi gives a wicked smirk as she watches an unconscious Weller.
According to series creator Martin Gero, Jane’s major memory lapse will be the centerpiece of Season 4 and will drastically change the nature of the show. In fact, “this isn’t Jane,” Gero clarifies. “Jane has lost the memories for the last three years of her life. She’s woken up as Remi, her evil alter ego… and Remi hates the FBI. Has and always will.”
And even though Blindspot‘s last three seasons have seen Jane and her team taking down baddies, she will be the adversary when the series returns, Gero confirms.
“Remi is one of the main bad guys for the beginning of Season 4,” he tells us. “Her plan was always to infiltrate and destroy them, and now she’s back and the team’s in a lot of trouble. She’s going to use the fact that everyone thinks she’s Jane and try to get her old plan back in motion.”
Read on for Gero’s insights about the finale’s other big events:
THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE | Roman, Jane, the FBI team and Hank Crawford all met up in Cape Town, South Africa, where Roman intended to end the cat-and-mouse game with his sister once and for all. Jane was ultimately the one to kill Crawford — in the very orphanage where she and Roman grew up, which Crawford built! — but Roman didn’t get his happy ending, after all. He met up with Blake later that afternoon, and even though he wanted to finally spill all of his secrets to her, he never got that chance. Blake shot her boyfriend, revealing that she knew his real name was Roman and that he had committed some real atrocities. “Did you love me?” Roman asked after taking the bullet. “How could I? I never knew you,” Blake replied.
Jane found Roman as he was bleeding out, and the two shared a lovely, apologetic moment before Roman died. “Sadly, we always knew that Roman had to die at the end of this season,” Gero says of the pivotal death. “As the mastermind of these new tattoos, his allegiance to one side or the other was just too powerful.”
But there’s reason to believe Luke Mitchell could return next season via flashbacks. Not only does Remi assume that Roman is still alive, but, before he died, Roman left Jane with a gift: a USB drive that contained even more clues about Jane’s remaining tattoos, plus some fragmented medical data that could eventually lead Jane to a cure for the ZIP poisoning. And there are more drives just like that one — hidden all around the world.
“We love Luke Mitchell and are as gutted as you are that the character had to die,” Gero admits. “But hopefully this isn’t the last you’ve seen of [him] on Blindspot.”
WHO RUN THE WORLD? | After getting gunned down by his girlfriend, Roman asked Blake who told her the truth about him. “Someone I trust,” Blake answered… and we later learned that someone was Zapata. After being terminated from the CIA — and subsequently ending things with Reade as quickly as she started them — Zapata apparently found a new purpose in life, and Blake will help her fulfill it. “This is how we take the power back,” Zapata calmly told Blake. “This is how we change the world.”
Gero confirms that Zapata and Blake’s team-up will be a major focus of Season 4, and the two women could very well make a formidable pair.
He teases: “With [Zapata’s] help, Blake hopes to step up and run HCI Global, her father’s company — and, well, basically rule the world.”

Overwhelmed!
Annnnnd I’m done. *sigh* They lost me with Jane being the big bad for next season. Darnit.
I totally agree. Jane and Zapata as evil baddies killed this show for me. The showrunners really screwed up. I’m done with Blindspot.
We don’t know that Zapata is gonna be evil next season, they said Jane would but not Zapata. All we know is that she went to her CIA meeting and then mysteriously ended up being on a plane with Blake who trusts her. I call red herring.
What isn’t a red herring on this silly show?
In other interviews the show runners said Zepata in s3 e17 goes into the bathroom with Blake and her coms go out. So we know at least at that point they were working together.
That said I am disappointed in Blacklist and Blindspot having to rip the 2 people apart. Blacklist is at its worst when Liz hates Red, I’m done with that show.
Blindspot same thing with Weller and Jane. In the same interview the show runner says Jane and Weller are stable so of course they rip them apart. Half a season they’re on the same page just ugh. Dumb
Feeling the same way – I’m done
Count me out too. I’ve actually been thinking lately, too many shows are doing this sort of thing – dragging out stories all season long and then throwing in huge twists at the end (not to mention the middle)/Same goes for The Blacklist, which has been another of my favorite shows. With Blindspot I got sick of Shepherd long before that wound up, and then we’ve had to suffer through Roman all this time, and now we have to “discover” still MORE of Jane’s furshlugginer backstory? Never mind.
I’m out too, it’s become too silly. By the looks of it Gero never had anything planned after season 2. Season 3 was terrible.
Agree, I’m done with the Blacklist it’s at its worst when Liz hates Red, then they did the dumb bag of bones macguffin. And they had to follow it up with something dumb. Ugh and I love James Spader.
Blindspot the show runner says Jane and Weller are stable and they can’t have that. Again ugh
Yes, Jane and Zapata bad. What the frak?
Me too I’m tired of the stupid emotional rollercoaster they put us through. Like they couldn’t find another storyline. I’m.done with this show
I really am tired of the movie too. I want jane n Weller to have a happy ending. And no I don’t want Roman dying. I want him to get back with Jane n apologise. I want both of them happy. And as for Zapata going bad I saw that coming as well as Jane getting another shot of ZIP. movie is really stupid. I’m having headache already. I’m out😭
I’m just stunned. Truthfully, the shocks and surprises were pretty awesome storytelling, but they almost all heralded entirely unwelcome developments. I want Jane and Weller happy and together. I wanted redemption for Roman (even though I knew that was unlikely). I wanted Zapata to find her way back to the FBI and to Reade. I know everybody getting a happy ending isn’t realistic, but I get plenty of unhappy-ending-reality in my own life. I watch TV and movies to forget about reality. I can’t begin to imagine how season 4 can fix all that went wrong in the last 3 minutes of this episode. And, of course, I’ll probably watch with bated breath all next season hoping for things to resolve “the right way”. Very clever, Gero – well played.
Very clever Gero? Very dumb Gero. You need to get a life Sue and turn your unhappy-ending-reality around and stop trying to live a fantasy life through fictitious characters in a ridiculous fictitious drama. What is happy and together?
Well ouch, turtles, that really hurts. Didn’t know there was a wrong way to watch TV.
No kidding. Quite cruel. Many people watch TV and movies, read books, etc as a temporary ‘getaway’.
Lmao. Just because your life sucks and you’re a negative nancy, doesn’t mean our lives must suck as well. Happy and Together, you ask? That’s what television is about smartass. There are no limits. The fantasies and what ifs, aside from (or mixed with) real life situations. The illogical, nonsensical wonders and the limits past our imagination. You sound hypocritical as ANYONE watches tv gets a temporary getaway anyway. Same with horror fanatics. To do without doing, by watching and enjoying. Where is your life? Are you the God of tv because somehow hurt you? Life..
I’m done too. Zapata and Jane are now bad? That’s all they could come up with? And NBC cancelled The Brave and Rise?
Might be wrong, but I don’t think Zapata is bad. Her CIA exit felt too forced, I think she’s undercover.
I think you’re right. If it was real that she would’ve been fired in private and not in front of the team .
Undercover? How much undercover can there be? Surely she’d be confused and make mistakes.
remember the first scene between her and Keaton talking about undercover stuff?
I agree re Zapata being undercover. I think she made a deal with the CIA to do that to save her career.
I’m done too. The way Zapata’s character has changed in such a short time they have made her psychotic. There are just too many characters in this show all with too many plots going on, none of which matter. Reade and Zapata are bookends. Now Jane has “forgotten” she’s Jane and gone back to when she was Remi? How can that be. Too silly.
Finally, a show with twists that I didn’t expect. Unfortunately, I hated them lol.
Jane as the villain? Nope! I’m done.
Too bad but we can hardly hear (understand) most of it
I too will miss Luke Mitchell. Glad to see he might be back for the odd flashback. Now for Roman’s ‘evil’ twin to come to the fore so Luke can have more screen time. What? Too crazy a plot development? Is it any crazier than what we have now? I do enjoy the cray cray that this show is. It reminds me a lot of Prison Break, and how ridiculous that show was. I too think Zapata is under cover. But I like the Blake actress – glad she will be around a little more in season 4. I’m still on board, even if it is to roll my eyes and say how ridiculous it is. (Or maybe I just like shows where the main character is ‘Jane’!)
the Blake actress, the poor-mans Blake Lively.
fortunately, he said, that Jane is the big bad for the beginning of the 4th season… I guess it will work itself out
Cahacters need to pop a button for is make it more adults and have the young chick scale back on the red lipstick this isn’t the has shrine circus
I concur!
Holly expletive what a bait and switch that was. I never get stunned like that, but Blindspot literally caused my jaw to drop. I honestly hate that after all that nonsense between Kurt and Jane over the past three seasons she is now going to be a baddie. I hate it, but I can’t not watch it. How is it all going to play out. WTF! I need answers now. Seriously though I really hope the Jane being bad doesn’t last too long it would be too much. Well played Blindspot, well played.
May be Jane’s undercover. Everyone else is.
I. Didn’t like Roman dying. I really do not like Jane being bad again next season. Not sure I will watch it because of it. It’s time Zappa is found out
First thought was “jumped the shark”
Yup!
Ditto!
Nope. I want Jane and Weller together, and I’m not willing to sit through a bunch of episodes of evil Jane, just in the hopes of them being together and happy again. Dang it. I’m out.
Good lord. Have any of you ever actually stuck with one television show out there or do you lose your mind at the slightest change to the status quo? Such snowflakes. Blindspot isn’t even a great show. I can’t imagine how you must’ve fallen off your rocker when better shows shook things up.
TV shows don’t last more than a couple of season, so what are you watching?
Ah come on people.. this is how they got NBC to give them another season… Another season of the FBI kicking ass and chasing criminal masterminds wouldn’t fly.. but a 180 like this one… I’m all in… People who want relationship shows should go elsewhere.. they just busted them all up on Blindspot.. Good for them and I guess NBC bought it and gave them another season.. let’s see what happens..
Agreed. Most of the people above would be better suited to a romcom or Castle. I thought the finale was brilliant. I have been on this show since day 1, but after season 2 didn’t bother starting season 3 until about 6 weeks ago, due to lack of interest. It has been a wild ride this season, the new characters and twists were very welcome. As was more screen time for Roman. He did a tremendous job, hopefully we get to see him at least in a recurring role next season through flashbacks. I am looking forward to the Zapata/Blake team, will they be good guys or bad guys? And who did Roman leave the money to? How will Jane balance being a double agent and having to work with her team to find a cure for her condition? Lots of questions to answer and directions to go for season 4. Can’t wait. Nice job Blindspot team….. Also, need more Rich Dotcom.
You must be an NBC troll.
So you don’t want human beings, albeit fictional characters, to have relationships? Guess you don’t have relationships, sound sad dr.
Exactly. Shows need to keep reinventing themselves to stay fresh. I actually like the fact that they’re making Jane/Remi the big bad for S4. And glad that Blake is coming back too. Tori Anderson was great in No Tomorrow last year. Hopefully Blake gets more screen time so everyone can see what she can do.
Zapata twist-shocking and interesting. Bad Jane-overkill, lets hope showrunners look at comments and cut that off at the knees. Avery comes to see Weller, Jane recovers her memories, then different memory gaps more Alzheimers than evil-as they struggle to make her better and she struggles with not being able to work
How many more memory gaps, forgetting, remembering, and more Alzheimers can 5 people have? The whole Avery storyline was stupid.
The timeline is all messed up… Wasn’t there a 2 year time jump between season 2 and 3?
It makes sense. Year 1 (leaving Shepherd and Roman) after being hit with ZIP then she is sent to the FBI. Year 3 she’s back with the team and at the finale she gets ZIPped again.
Any guesses to who Roman was talking to on th phone before he died? Who’s continuing the work and getting the money?
Yeaah, I totally forgot about that! All the craziness at the very end took precedence. I thought Avery was the one that told Blake the truth about Roman but then also thought she could be the one on the phone. Since we can eliminate the former, I’ll guess it was Avery Roman was talking to.
“I’ll guess it was Avery Roman was talking to.”
Agreed.
It was Martin Gero Roman was talking to on the phone, e.g. continuing on with the work of this silly show and getting the money from NBC.
The ending is too melodramatic and the sudden twists and turns spoils all the trust it generated throughout the season 3…… all this make FBI look so stupid and naive, if that is what the director intended (highly unrealistic). The ending could have been more realistic and intelligent.
Shocking! Interesting! Heartbreaking! I am looking forward to see how this all unfolds.
Seriously? Evil Jane? If that nonsense lasts more than one episode I don’t know if I can watch.
Great finale
I don’t think Weller is injured in hospital remember Rich.com said that she have hallucination so waking up in the hospital could be part of it . Also if Roman was calling Zappata then that can’t be as she was working for Crawford .
We want Roman back..
