T20 World Cup 2024: India alloted 2nd Semifinal in Guyana - How can India use No Reserve Day in their Favour?

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has bore a piece of news which can be calamitous for any team when the tournament runs its course.

According to reports, there will be No Reserve Day in the 2nd Semifinal match of the competition.

T20 World Cup 2024

The absence of a Reserve Day for the second semifinal, scheduled for June 27, introduces a unique challenge. Traditionally, the ICC allows a Reserve Day to ensure the completion of knockout games. However, this time, should the match be unable to conclude on the set date, the team with a superior standing in the Super Eights will automatically progress to the final.

To mitigate potential delays, the match will start at 10:30 am local time, providing officials with an additional 250 minutes to attempt to complete the game within the same day.

The decision to omit a Reserve Day for the second semifinal arises from logistical and scheduling challenges. With the final scheduled for June 29 in Barbados, a Reserve Day for the semifinal would leave the victorious team less than 24 hours to prepare, including a 700 km flight. This tight turnaround was deemed too burdensome for the players and impractical for logistics. And that is the main reason given the omission of Reserve Day for the Guyana encounter.

No Reserve Day: Will it Impact Team India?

Yes, it can shall impact Team India as Rohit Sharma and his boys have been allotted to play in the 2nd Semifinal on June 27. As the 2nd semifinal starts at 10:30 am local time, it will be around 8 pm in India, suitable for the broadcasters as that will bring in a peak viewership from India.

But the 2nd semifinal in Guyana can be either beneficial or disastrous for Team India.

How can India use No Reserve Day in their Favour?

India is slotted in Group A. From each group, only two teams will advance to the Super Eight stage.

In the Super Eight, the teams will be divided into Two Groups - Group 1 and Group 2. The first-placed team of Group A will be going to Group 1 of the Super Eight.

In the 2nd semifinal, the Runner-Up of Group 1 in Super Eights will be taking on the Winner of Group 2.

Hence, if India qualify for the Super Eight in Group 1 (by finishing First in Group A) or Group 2 (by finishing 2nd in Group A) - they will have to make sure that they win their Super Eight group. In that case, Rohit Sharma and his boys will have the advantage if the match in Guyana gets washed out, as they will go straight to the Final as the virtue of finishing higher in the Super Eight group.
