Kenyan President, William Ruto has commended Zimbabwe’s “indomitable spirit” and its commitment to economic transformation.

During his speech at the official opening of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, Ruto acknowledged the hardships Zimbabwe has faced, but highlighted the country’s resilience.

“The resilience and fortitude of the Zimbabwean nation and the people is inspiring. They refused to be victims of their tribulations,” he said.

He expressed his belief that Zimbabwe is on the right track, attributing positive changes to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership.

“Under your leadership, Mr. President, it is evident that this indomitable spirit has received a shot in the arm,” Ruto said.

The Kenyan leader specifically praised Zimbabwe’s focus on revitalising agriculture.

“The restoration of agriculture as the cornerstone of economic growth, and of Zimbabwe as a famous breadbasket is at hand,” he declared.

Ruto went on to describe the positive ripple effects this would create, including “rural wealth and employment creation’ followed by “expansion in manufacturing and growth in exports”.

Another key area highlighted by Ruto is Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development.

He pointed out the improvements in transport, energy, and ICT sectors, noting that this enhanced connectivity would “bolster domestic and regional connectivity, increasing productivity, promoting trade and attracting investment”.

Ruto specifically mentioned Zimbabwe’s membership in regional trade organisations as evidence of the country’s commitment to economic integration.

The introduction of the ZIG currency, backed by gold and other assets, was hailed by Ruto as a “radical revitalisation of Zimbabwe’s monetary policy” that would contribute significantly to the country’s economic resurgence.

President Ruto also noted the importance of innovation for Zimbabwe’s future success.

“The sky is the limit if Zimbabwe pursues innovation as a catalyst of industrialisation and trade,” he stated.

Ruto outlined the various ways innovation could revolutionise Zimbabwe’s economy, from automation and artificial intelligence to financial inclusion and e-commerce.
