YouTube issues warning against ad-blocking apps; encourages users to opt for Premium

YouTube in a community update has announced that it will take actions against the third-party apps that use the streaming platform to get in-video advertisements. The platform is committed to upholding its terms of service and that ad-blocking programmes negatively impact video creators’ ability to make money from their work. 

The company has issued a warning, saying that customers who use it could experience problems with buffering or error messages when trying to watch videos. It has announced that it would take “appropriate action” against apps that break the terms of service of its API services and allow users to watch videos without advertisements. 

The action is in line with a global strategy that was unveiled in November 2023. Additionally, the announcement reflects YouTube’s ongoing efforts to maintain a sustainable ecosystem for creators while providing quality content to its global audience.

Primarily, YouTube relies on advertising as its main source of revenue while features such as Super Chat, channel memberships and merchandise contribute to creators’ earnings. In addition to this, YouTube Premium subscriptions is another medium of revenue for the platform.

According to YouTube’s Community Guidelines Enforcement report for the period October to December 2023, with 2,254,902 video takedowns India leads in the global video takedown. However, the total video takedown globally is 90,12,232. Singapore is at the second position with 1,243,871 takedowns, followed by the United States in third place with 788,354 video removals.

Moreover, YouTube stressed that the presence of ads on its platform enables billions of users worldwide to access content without charge, underscoring the importance of fair compensation for creators based on viewership. The streaming service also encouraged users seeking an ad-free experience to subscribe to YouTube Premium, which offers various perks including background playback, offline viewing, and ad-free access to YouTube Music.
