History Of Black Gospel Music
Black Gospel (often called Gospel) is a form that is a part of the African American Christian genre. It has its roots in the transformation from African slaves Christianity in the course of and after the transatlantic slave trade. It started with songs of work sung in the fields. Later, religious songs were sung in various churches and later designated under the term Negro Spirituals (which shaped much of the traditional Black Gospel).
Black Gospel music has been consistently concerned with the struggle of African-Americans for freedom. It has served as a source of “spiritual and communal uplift,” initially on the field, afterwards within the Black Church; during the 1960s, in the South, it has been described as being”the “soundtrack of the struggle for civil rights,” aiding in the struggle to build unity and faith in the battle.
The most recent version of this type of music, called contemporary Gospel, was born in the late 1970s and was an amalgamation of the classic genre with the stylistics of the day of secular Black music. It led to the popularization of a new generation of musicians and songs, broadening the genre’s reach.
The earliest form of black Gospel music comes from that of the African American spiritual, which existed for more than 100 years before Black Gospel music began to rise to fame around World War II in 1930. However, songs composed by African American composers in the decades after emancipation, which featured biblical themes and often borrowed on spirituals, inspired the creation of the Gospel. One instance can be found in “De Gospel Cars,” composed by the well-known musician Sam Lucas.
Many African American communities migrated from rural areas to urban ones during the early 20th century and brought their worship tradition with their communities. Following the same practices as the one-room churches of the agricultural South and the church with a storefront in the cities of northern Africa became the main venue for the spread of the Gospel.

Donald Andrew “Donnie” McClurkin, Jr. (born on November 9 1959) is a famous American gospel musician and minister. He has been awarded three Grammy Awards, ten Stellar Awards, Two BET Awards and two Soul Train Awards, one Dove Award and one NAACP Image Awards. McClurkin is among the most popular gospel artists selling more than 10 million albums around the world. Variety called McClurkin the “Reigning King of Urban Gospel”. He was appointed an associate minister in Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit, Michigan, in 1989. McClurkin was his assistant under Winans for more than 10 years. The year 1991 saw a severe swelling and pain, which was followed by internal bleeding, caused, he claims to him being identified as being suffering from leukaemia. The doctor advised immediate treatment. However, McClurkin, who was 31 years old, decided to follow himself at his word. “I tell people to believe that God will save you,” McClurkin said, “[and] I had to turn around and practice the very thing that I preached.” He was appointed and then sent out to Winans in 2001. On January 20 in 1996, Franklin got married to long-time friend Tammy Collins. After their wedding, they each had a child from their previous relationships. They have two kids together. Linda passed away on September 9 2010, after complications with colon cancer. They have three kids, Marvin II, Mikaila, and Madison.

Bishop Hezekiah Walker (born December 24, 1962) is an acclaimed American gospel artist and pastor of the renowned Brooklyn New York megachurch, Love Fellowship Tabernacle. Walker has released several albums through Benson Records and Verity Records under Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir. Walker was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He went to Long Island University, majoring in Sociology. He also was a student at Hugee Theological Seminary and the New York School of the Bible. In 2001, Hezekiah and The LFT Church Choir were nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Best Gospel Artist Traditional based on their album “Love Is Love!” In addition, Walker was awarded Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album by Choir Or Chorus twice in 1994 for the live performance In Atlanta in 1994 at Morehouse College (1994) with The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir. The other time in 2001 for the album Love is Live! (2001) with The LFT Church Choir.

Richard Smallwood (born on November 30 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American gospel musician who established The Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977 in Washington, DC. Richard Smallwood graduated cum laude from Howard University with degrees in both piano and vocal performance and completed research within ethnomusicology. Smallwood was part of The Celestials, the first gospel group at Howard’s university campus. The band was also the very first gospel band to perform in Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. Thus, Smallwood was also the founder of Howard’s first gospel group. The most well-known song by Smallwood is the song Total Praise, which he composed in 1996 when he was going through grief in his life, along with I Love the Lord that Whitney Houston popularized. William David McDowell (born August 31 1976) is a famous American gospel singer. He began his career in music in 2009 when he released his debut album, As We Worship, by Entertainment One Music. This album would chart on three Billboard charts: Gospel Albums, Independent Albums and Heatseekers Albums. The sophomore album, Arise was released in the year 2011 by Entertainment One. It charted on three Billboard charts once more, with this one being The Billboard 200, Gospel Albums, and Independent Albums. The third album of his called Withholding Nothing is out now together with Entertainment One. Again, the album was to chart on three charts: The Billboard 200, Gospel Albums and Independent Albums. McDowell was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album for the third time on his album. In his twenty-somethings, McDowell relocated from Orlando, Florida, to study at Full Sail University, where the degree was Entertainment Business. He was taught by Ron Kenoly when he was the music director at his school. Following college, his mentorship continued under the direction of Sam Hinn while he was the Worship Minister at The Gathering Place Church. In May of 2010, McDowell married LaTae; They live outside of Orlando, Florida, with their three children.
