can connect to the network but not the internet running xp

I am running an xp computer on a LAN, can connect to the network, ping the DNS server, gateway, etc.  however, i can not conncet to the internet.  when i ping a web address using the site name or xxx.xxx.x.xx address i have no success.  Tried resetting winsock, tcp/ip with no luck.  would appreciate any help.

It seems to me that packets to your local network are getting routed properly but packets destined outside your network are not.  You can try bringing up a command prompt window (Start -> Run -> "cmd") and enter the command:
     route  print

The result of this printout should include a "0.0.0.0" line that points to your router like this:

Network  Destination        Netmask          Gateway       Interface           Metric
            0.0.0.0                       0.0.0.0          192.168.1.1    192.168.1.200     20

If there are more than one "0.0.0.0" lines, use the one with the lower "Metric" number.  This redirects all packets not in your local network to the gateway.

You might also read the manual to your router.  Some routers have security settings that can be set to only allow certain computers to access the internet.

Sometimes the following program can fix problems when nothing else works:
    WinSockXPFix:  < http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html >

1. Power down PC.

 

2. Power down router.

 

3. Power up router.

 

4. Power up PC.
