Frequency

Released: November 20, 2001

Highlights

  • The first project from renowned studio Harmonix
  • First Harmonix game to feature in-house electro-band, Freezepop
  • Used the PS2 network adapter for multiplayer

Frequency was a dream-come-true for fans of groovy music. As the first project by Harmonix, Frequency marked an important point in the history of music games and was a stepping stone for later Harmonix hits like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Frequency allowed players to control individual tracks in a song with a visually stunning interface, and it all happened with enough style to make Daft Punk jealous.

Frequency wasn't only a fun game but it also featured a fantastic soundtrack. This would have been appetizing on its own, but the game was also one of early PS2 games to make use of the system's network adapter which enabled online multiplayer.

It was the perfect game for people that wanted to create music as much as play a video game, as gamers built the songs as they played. For those with plenty of creative juice, Frequency also sported a remix option so players could create their own versions of the included tracks and play them back in game.

Frequency was, without a doubt, a milestone in console music games.
