Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will not return to The NFL Today this fall, the sports commentators announced Monday.

Former quarterback Esiason broke his news on his WFAN morning radio show Boomer and Gio.

“For the last two months, you know, I’ve been trying to figure out what I wanted to do and where I want to be,” he said. “I am stepping away from The NFL Today on CBS, more their decision than maybe mine, but I really thought that the Super Bowl was my swan song.”

Simms announced his exit Monday via a post on X. “Great 26 year run with CBS SPORTS,” he wrote. “Even though that part of my career is over I look forward to what is next.”

Matt Ryan, a quarterback who retired from the NFL in April, will become part of The NFL Today in Simms and Esiason’s wake, CBS announced Monday. He’ll join remaining analysts James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill COwher and JJ Watt.

“Phil and Boomer set the standard of excellence for NFL analysts,” said David Berson, CBS Sports president and CEO. “We are so grateful for their immeasurable contributions to CBS Sports. We genuinely thank them for being incredible teammates and for their passion, dedication and commitment to elevating CBS Sports’ NFL coverage every season.”
