Q&A
Knee ligament strength*
I've seen the video where this goes so, so wrong.
Yeah, this is what I was coming to post. It is really risky.
Why?
This particular movement puts a lot of strain on the ACL, lateral meniscus, and medial meniscus. You could get a similar core workout by anchoring above the knee for support so the flex is primarily on the hips.

I concur, not as a doctor, but a person who has blown an ACL. It is not hard to do. Thanks Tictok for inspirations like this. Reminds me of a video where a kid took anvil in the pool to show how cool it was to drop to the bottom so quickly holding on. Meanwhile parent's pool now has a few thousand dollars of damage. Oh... China must really hate us.
What ppl don't understand is that while muscles can take some abuse, ligaments cannot!
Yeah, this combines a sissy squat and weighted core work, two things that really don't need to be combined. Just do them separately like you're not recording for the grams. Smh
Yes this is stupid and could be done without the continued knee strain.
Yeah, but that wouldn't allow her to farm for likes and interactions. Reddit and Instagram os full of dangerous and purposeless workouts
Literally no need to do this, other than to post...
The strain of supporting her extended torso is being directed largely into her knee (a joint) that isn’t built for forces of this nature. There is a video floating around of a guy doing something similar and his knee gives out completely and he falls and he’s fucked.
As in, the ligament snaps?
You seem knowledgeable on the subject but maybe you're not the right person to ask. I've been looking for a device similar to this for core exercises but after what you said about the damage to the knees, this isn't sounding like a great idea anymore.
Is there a similar device on the market that will allow for an exercise like this without the strain on my knees? I think someone else posted something about how an anchor point at the knees would fix this. Do you (or anyone really) know where I can find something like that that has as small a footprint?
I weld so even just pictures of something similar would go a long way...
I appreciate it! Thank you!
What? Proper fucked?
Easy to tear something
Leg good at compression and some tension. Leg very bad at shear force
Imagine a piece of wood shaped like an L, this is the shape of her body while doing this workout. If you anchored the shorter length to the floor like she has her feet held down and start putting weight on the platform it’ll really wanna break. In fact w how strong she is it’s probably like 100lbs on the platform. The body has to deal with this stress, and all that weight is being held up at her knees.
Just watch a video where the knees snap. It makes quite the melodically satisfying pop/snap sound.
Knee go boom
When I played football in high school I used to be able to do 350 lb leg extensions which I thought was bad ass. Then it caused Osgood-Schlatter and my knees are still fucked up today.
I was going to say that that looks like a great way to get a serious injury.
Are sissy squats in general okay?
My trainer gets me to do them.

Yea, most of the strain is on her knees. Not worth it.
I used to do extended situps like this thinking it was cool, but then I thought about it, and realized it's fucking up my knees. My knees shouldn't be burning in this exercise.
This is a common misconception.
In reality the best way to tell whether you’re getting a good workout is intense pain in unrelated parts of your body.
Just like you know you’re doing bicep curls properly if you have a shooting pain in your neck, and you know your squat form is on point if you feel a strong shearing force in your back.
I thoroughly enjoyed the sarcasm. But crossfitters think you're serious.

Remember to lift with your back, not your legs.
I knew I was doing it wrong

Make sure to hold your breath through the reps as well if you feel light headed that means it's working
Solid advice. Another tip for squat form, the best way to feel squats is to exhale and lose all tension going into the bottom position. On the way up you can also touch your knees together so you can stimulate your knees maximally. There's a reason all the cool bodybuilders say "no gain no pain".
When I squat, I like to take my glutes out of the equation so my hip joints are bearing most of the load. It's a personal choice, ya know?

/s, right? I don't have much experience and just want to be sure before I start doing pullups where my knees hurt lol.
Yes, the implied /s is very relevant here. Don't actually do this.
How long have you been in CrossFit?
first time I laughed out loud all day
You know I used to be an adventurer like you….. something something knee
Yep. Knee bang bang!
Oh Jesus, I just recovered from meniscus repair surgery a few months ago and this hurt me on a spiritual level.
I nervously scrambled to turn it off as the video looped again.
Ugh I dropped my phone that was so bad
This is the video I instantly thought of
That crunch though. Yikes
what the fuck

Ohhhhh. No no no no nooo.
I'm amazed at how everything on Reddit has something to do with 'core strenght'.
Also if you're trying to work your abs your knees/quads shouldn't be the ones burning. Just be smart and efficient and leave the acrobatics to the Cirque du Soleil
That really depends on what kind of training you are doing. If you are working on isolated muscle groups like a lot of bodybuilders do and/or are using very high weight, sure. But there is a lot of benefit to working multiple muscle groups together, especially for athletes.
The abs are a stabilizing muscle and, therefore, in most practical uses, work in conjunction with other muscle groups. Working abs without developing the neuromuscular stabilization you get by working in with other muscle groups can be detrimental to your overall strength.
I personally very rarely work strictly on abs in isolation and still have a strong, toned core. Exercises like pullups, pushups, squats, modified rows, most free weight exercises, etc., all work abs as a secondary muscle. But just because they are worked as a secondary muscle does not mean you do not gain muscle, tone, and especially strength in your core.
I'm not condoning the exercise in the post, it looks like a lot can go wrong, but in my opinion, your statement that other muscle groups shouldn't be burning if you are working abs is only true in an "isolation fitness" style of training, and there are plenty of benefits to practicing full body workouts and gaining overall strength as opposed to focusing on individual groups and muscle mass.
You know what? That's a fair opinion. I should be more specific that not every complex exercise is a bad exercise.
There are ways of working out multiple muscle groups at the same time and still be healthy, like they teach over at r/bodyweightfitness. The exercise of OP on the other hand still is r/MuscleConfusion (although with less flare) to me.
Yeah I’m thinking I could do zero of those
No one should do those. Very, very dangerous. Like stupid level dangerous. Maybe one level lower than walking in traffic.
This reminds me of Money……
…..’cause MAH KNEE is hurtin’!!!

Haha cloat for knee injuries.
Also unnecessary. Just do two separate exercises for more gains.
Thank God I'm not alone. First thing I thought was, "Yeah you CAN do it, but should you?"
Eventually that will catch up to you.
Came here to say this too. My core can do that but my aging knees, not so much.
YES , I came here Just to say I know from orthopedic experience, that this puts an enormous amount of strain on your knees in a way they are NOT designed to withstand!
I can pick up my underwear with my feet without having to bend down.
Yeah but she can reach down and pick them up with her teeth.
your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could they didn't stop to think if they should
Clever girl.
So can my dog lol
I have perfected the toe grab and kick flip since injuring my back. It is a gentleman's move.
I finish it off by (trying to) toss them on my head, then putting them down in the laundry basket
If I shimmy right, my underwear picks itself up due to a series of implanted magnets running the length of both my legs. I have magnets sewn into the waistband of the underwear as well and when I step into them, those underwear magnets travel along the leg magnets at a high speed, very similar to a Gauss cannon. It's cool though. The impact of from padded underwear rocketing up my legs wads up by dong and danglers so tight, I feel like I can do anything!
It would have cost you nothing not to say any of that. But here we are. Here. We. Are.
Like some sort of large hardon collider.
Because the tiniest particles known to man are involved?
Optimizing your body and outfit to save time. That’s a septillionaire sigma grindset if I’ve ever seen one.
Imagine the underwear flying grabbing your balls like Harry Potter going over time in Quidditch
What technique you use? Kick it up and catch it or the toe grab and bend knees?
That’s impressive.

Forgive me if I’m just dumb. But isn’t this awful for her knees over time? The weight of her body fully supported by mainly her knees at that angle
You are not dumb, this exercise is. Just doing it because it looks good but truth is it put way to much stress on your knees and there are tons of better exercise for the core
Yea it doesn’t seem worth the risk to me. But my knees are smoked from being a mechanic. 25 and they sound like rice krispies

This makes me feel better. Having knee and hip issues now, but trying to stay active. Will use this as motivation!!
I was a roofer from 18-32 and I figured they were gone, but they've definitely come round. I'm 36 now and can still sit on my haunches and get up without using my hands.
You need to train your quads + hamstrings + core to relive your knees of the pressure.
But most importantly the tibialis
