About
The National WWII Museum is the top-rated tourist destination in New Orleans and #2 in the U.S., and an unforgettable way to experience World War II—from industrial efforts on the home front to the combat experience of the American servicemember abroad. Offering a compelling blend of sweeping narrative and poignant personal detail, the Museum features immersive exhibits, multimedia experiences, and an expansive collection of artifacts and first-person oral histories to take visitors inside the story of the war: why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. Beyond the galleries, the Museum offers unique access to experiential history, including an opportunity to tour and ride on an authentically restored PT-boat, tours behind the scenes to handle artifacts alongside Museum curators, and an impressive collection of restored and working macro-artifacts to discover. Open early through 1/2/18, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Neighborhood: Central Business District
Compared to the more evocative monikers of some other parts of New Orleans, the downtown’s humdrum title might suggest that this area is all about business and little else. But don’t let the bland name keep you away from the Central Business District. The CBD offers a wide range of fun things to do that would be touted as exceptional in less jubilant corners of the world. Bordered by the French Quarter, the Arts District and Tremé, with the river at its eastern extreme, this hub for sports, gaming, shopping, theatre, family-friendly activities, and amazing regional cuisine makes a smart base wherever your interests lie.

- LizchasteenClemson, South Carolina45 contributionsMust see!Our family of 6 really enjoyed our time at the museum. It is very well done! We added the movie to our ticket, and it was fantastic, highly recommend doing that! Make sure you see all the parts of the museum as it can be a little confusing where to go next. We also ate lunch at the restaurant and the chicken sandwich was delicious. The shrimp and grits were a little small in portion. Great day at the museum.Visited June 2023Written June 19, 2023
- Ryan G6 contributionsPowerful Experience! This is an extremely well-designed museum with beautiful displays and multimedia experiences. Make sure to give yourself enough time to thoroughly enjoy this massive museum. You can spend an entire day if you take your time, but at least allow for a few hours.Visited June 2023Written July 1, 2023
- SwissMissCanton of Zurich, Switzerland137 contributionsExcellent Museum to learn some important historyThis museum was not on our original list of things to visit in New Orleans, but we ended up going there when we had an afternoon free. I am so glad we did! The presentation is really well done with many films and some rooms designed to make you feel you were actually there (e.g. a jungle setting). We only allocated 2.5 hours to this museum, we should have done more. There was a one hour movie, narrated by Tom Hanks, which we did not have time to see. I will definitely be back to visit if I come to New Orleans again.Visited May 2023Written July 5, 2023
- ParisgalChicagoILThe Villages, Florida701 contributionsMarvelous Museum! We had not been to New Orleans in ten years when we last visited this remarkable museum…I still needed tissues to get through the exhibits. This history lesson has evolved into even a better experience than we remembered. We spent five hours here and didn’t see it all. Helpful volunteers, hands on exhibits, great video presentations, temporary Disney exhibit, nice gift shops and restaurants…really a remarkable place of learning and remembering.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 8, 2023
- Michael PChico, California65 contributionsAs a history and museum buff, definitely a must-see!We've toured the entire 48 lower states over the last 15 years and seen many museums, including the collections at the Smithsonian. My wife commented that this museum experience was by far her favorite, right up there with the Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington. She liked the one-stop-shop experience of all of WW II being right here in one place, and we felt that there was a good balance of perspectives shown. We didn't partake of the evening lights show, the submarine experience, or the additional movie, but did hit everything else in the museum. Including lunch within the museum at the American Sector venue, and a little bit of shopping, we literally spent the entire day there from the time they opened until the closing bell. We missed this attraction on our first trip to New Orleans in 2019, and glad we made it back and were able to spend a whole day here just in the museum this time.Visited July 2023Written July 25, 2023
- Mindy from Florida2 contributionsDon't miss this!I'm so glad we put this on our agenda during our New Orleans visit. There are so many fascinating stories and reminders of the incredible challenges the troops encountered during the war. We only had half a day to tour the museum, and we were able to get through most of the exhibits. There is a lot of walking and standing involved, but there area some benches scattered around.Visited July 2023Written July 30, 2023
- Shannon LKentucky34 contributionsMassive Museum! This museum is massive!! We allowed ourselves 4 hours to get through this museum and it wasn't long enough! This was one of the best museums I have ever visited. The information and exhibits were fascinating and extensive. The only suggestion I have, is that I would have liked to see an area devoted solely to the Holocaust.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 11, 2023
- Mark O129 contributionsWorth the high ratingThis is a very very well put together museum. The text is easy to read and well positioned. There enough detail but without being over whelmed. The museum has a good sense of background theatre to the different locations of the war. We didn’t read everything but spent 6 hours here - much more than the suggested 3. We did this over 2 days, paying a further $12 each for the 2nd day ticket ( you need evidence of day 1 ticket). I recommend you start early if you hope to do in 1 day.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 19, 2023
- Lloyd MChapel Hill, North Carolina1,560 contributionsSo much to learnA great museum. I normally go through museums quickly and went in expecting to spend 30-60 mins, ended up three hours. They walk you through the pacific and European campaigns and you get a great understanding of how both campaigns evolved, what it was like and how the allies won (spoiler alert). It’s light on the actual artifacts (not a ton of planes, guns, etc), it’s more about the story telling and it works well. Great way to spend a few hours, you’ll come out with a much better understanding of the war.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 21, 2023

Unless you're only in New Orleans to party on Bourbon Street, this stop simply MUST be on your itinerary. We're not even particularly interested in history, but everyone we talked to steered us towards this museum. We thought that we'd spend the morning there, then move onto something more to our liking. OMG...we were BLOWN away! We were there by opening and stayed until closing. We still saw only a fraction of the exhibits. It turned out to be the favorite thing we did on our trip. We enjoyed the 4D IMAX movie, too (be sure to book ahead because they sell out). It nicely tied everything together. I hear that the Tang experience was well worth it, too, but by the time I inquired about it at 11:00, they were sold out for the day. We also heard (too late) about an early morning museum tour that was excellent. In any event, show up at opening in order to be ahead of the wave - this place gets majorly crowded. Word is out that it's a must-do while in town. Heck, this museum is so good that it might even be worth a trip to New Orleans just to experience it!

We opted for a one day ticket and were able to see a good chunk of the museum. We visited in March 2020 during the Coronavirus scare so all the interactive touch screens had been turned off, but there was still plenty to see. We thought the museum was a nice blend of historical artifacts, stuff to read, and videos to watch. The 4D movie narrated by Tom Hanks is well worth the money. You can easily spend a full day here. The sit down restaurant inside was pretty good!

We spent between 4 and five hours exploring the exhibits and presentation as well as taking in the 4-D performance (really loved it, totally worth extra time and $). Honestly, we could have been there for a day at least, however, it is a personal interest. The aged school children were blasting through the place and if you take your family and you have kids under high school they'll lose interest and you won't want to spend more than 3 or 4 hours.

Even though we are Canadian, we enjoyed learning a bit more about the war. The movie (narrated by several famous people including Tom Hanks) was VERY well done. We only had two hours to tour the museum so the $35 price was a little expensive for us. It is a place you can easily spend several hours (or even a full day) in. Much to see and learn about.

You only need to see some of the exhibits and watch the multi- media presentation Beyond All Boundaries to become completely involved in the experiences this huge museum offers. Even if you have a good grasp of World War II history, you will find a LOT more to learn. There is a restaurant called The American Sector serving good enough food that you can expect a wait to be seated. Then, you find that the food and service are excellent. Realism prevails throughout the several buildings. There are still exhibits and active video ones. Plan to spend 1-2 days if you want to see it all. It is one of the most outstanding museum presentations I have ever seen. It is a must see!!

My professional historian friend summed it up that museum up for me as a "theme park." Indeed it is very interactive and what it may lack in some senses for hardcore historians in research and fact, it makes up by presentation and interactivity.
It has greatly expanded since I was last there in 2011 and one needs at least one full day to see everything sufficiently. Be sure to see the movie that Tom Hanks narrates "Beyond All Boundaries" with its 4D presentation (yes, keep thinking theme park!). And make sure to keep interacting using the electronic "dogtag" they give you before you start your journey on the 1940s style train that took many ordinary American civilians and made them "Citizen Soldiers."

This museum was really great and well worth it. You should put aside a good portion of your day to see everything. We are not huge museum goers but were there around 5-6 hours. We had visited Normandy, the American Cemetary and Omaha and Utah beaches a year ago and seeing the d-day section was really great. There were also some special sections that were nice about the capture of a nazi war criminal and another section where artists made things out of glass pieces that a priest found around Europe. These 2 were special exhibits that rotate. Everything is spread out nicely in different buildings and people are always around to help. Make sure to spend the extra money to see the 48 minute 4D movie narrated by Tom Hanks (Beyond All Boundaries). It was excellent and really explained the whole process of WW2 and how the USA got involved. I'd say this is more of a museum for adults and not so much for young kids as they would not be interested. There's a lot of interactive stuff too. A great museum well worth visiting while in NOLA. Get there early when they open to make the most of your visit before it gets too crowded.

Wow, what a great and fun and educational museum. Their film with Tom Hanks was well worth the cost, very stunning and moving. The entire museum was very interactive and filled with great videos of the war in both theaters. We spent an entire day and was so well worth it for the overall quality. Highly recommend this museum.

The exhibits, videos and movies were very well done and informative. You learn about what was happening in the different countries leading up to the war and then the events that happened in the European side of the war (on one floor of the building) and the events on the Pacific side of the war (on another floor). There are lot of personal stories on display and many artifacts including airplanes, weapons, clothes and personal effects. Only spent one day there but can probably spend many days there looking at the exhibits more closely. Would highly recommend visiting this museum

We really enjoyed the museum once we got to it. It is a good walk from the French Quarter, but you can do the hop on hop off bus or take a cab to get there instead. The place is under construction, so it was a bit roughed up. Exhibits were very immersive and you could spend a whole day here if you listen to all of the audios and videos. You do get a very significant discount if you decide to come back for a second day within 7 days of buying your ticket. The planes in the large building where you can walk on catwalks to get up close to them were great, unless you have vertigo (there is actually a sign posted saying people with vertigo should not go on the walkways on the 3rd or 4th floors. Friendly and helpful staff. Overall, a really nice museum. I do not know what they are building right now, but I would like to see what it is once it is done.

The website for the museum will have answers to your questions about entrance fees for seniors and movies. i noticed that people with disabilities even get another discounted fee! There is a tax on top of the listed entrance fee. The Tom Hanks movie, Beyond all Boundaries, has an additional fee $11US. It used to be $7 - not worth $11 IMO. All other videos in the building augment the displays they are grouped with so are free.
At the bottom the WWII website is contact info for emails. Ask your question about renting a motor scooter in your email to WWII museum personnel.

I am not sure. You could always email them or call and ask. I will say that it is very cool in the museum and you might want a sweater, jacket, etc. if you mind the air conditioning.

That is strange. We saw in in August 2021. I would call the Museum to double check. It is worth the effort to find out.
