Lightbulb Next Warcraft movie - Sequel, just set in the same universe, or reboot?

So it's old news that Legendary Pictures is reportedly* working on a new Warcraft movie, but as far as I'm aware it's not publicly known whether it will be a sequel to Duncan Jones' movie, a movie set in the same universe as that one, or a complete reboot.

    * Meaning that the information is not necessarily true - since we haven't heard anything since it was reported back in September 2020 that may indicate that may be the case, or that the project got cancelled before anything was ever announced, or they are still working on it - who knows!

So I'm wondering, what would you prefer?

Even before the disappointment of the 2016 film became a reality, it seemed like a lot of people really would've preferred that they had made "the Arthas movie" instead. Of those who cared I bet that was the majority opinion. Personally I didn't want that, I was very happy that they started from the beginning (which of course is the subtitle of the 2016 film in some markets). So while I must admit that the first movie lacked in execution, I rather enjoyed seeing them starting the film franchise at the point that they did.

So my preference would be that they continue the franchise rather than reboot it. However, given the financial disappointment I understand that from a business perspective they probably will do something else than a sequel, and that probably "the Arthas movie" is their best bet. So my preference would be that they go ahead and do that, but still keep that in the same "universe" as the first film.

This is what I would love to see them try:

    • Do a movie with Arthas as the protagonist, with Jaina and Uther as major supporting characters. Adapt the first part of his life, including the rise of The Plague across Lordaeron. Let the dramatic conclusion of the film be the Culling of Stratholme. I would call it "Warcraft: Arthas, Prince of Lordaeron"!

If "Arthas, Prince of Lordaeron" is successful:

    • Make a direct sequel to "Warcraft: The Beginning" by adapting Warcraft: Tides of Darkness!

Then, if "Tides of Darkness" is a financial failure :

    • Course-correct again and only do a sequel to "Arthas, Prince of Lordaeron"

If, however, "Tides of Darkness" is a success , go big by greenlighting 2 films at once, produce them simultaneously using a separate cast (mostly) and crew and then release them both during the same year:

    • Adaption of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal, introducing Ner'zhul and seeing him become the first Lich King (early summer release)
    • Adaption of the rest of Arthas' life up until the end of Warcraft III. I would call it "Warcraft: Arthas, the Lich King" (holidays release)

That's pretty much it in terms of what I'd hope their plan would be. But if that pans out of course they'd continue the franchise, so then I'd like:

    • Illidan prequel movie (seeing as he would've appeared in a scene of "Arthas, the Lich King" to go up against the title character!) that would cover his journey through War of the Ancients up until his exile to Outland
    • A movie that adapts the story arcs of Thrall and (the rest of) Jaina from Warcraft III

    And so on....

Why on earth would you want to do a reboot? Are you just saying that because you're so acclimated to Hollywood's creative bankruptcy and tendency to reboot everything?

Just get to the Second War.

Second War with an epic showdown between Lothar and Doomhammer.

I enjoyed the first instalment, not a masterpiece but it was very enjoyable to me, I didn't care about the lore change.

For the sake of it, I'd prefer a sequel. I'm never really in favor of stopping a "serie" after one fail, we never get to know where the franchise would lead, and sometimes, having the full picture can change your point of view of the first elements which you initially thought sucks.

If I were Legendary, I wouldn't even try to approach Arthas. Warcraft fans have proven they won't be happy anyway, so trying with the biggest lore figure ? No chance it will ever succeed. Lorewise ("no lore change" vs "ok for new story" teams), casting-wise (honestly... I can't think of any actor that the community would accept to star as Arthas, maybe Cavill ?)...
We also need to think about the full picture. Arthas/LK might be famous enough, but Legendary will not make the movie for WoW's playerbase. So they'll need to go in details to introduce every single character properly, so the movie would either be rushed af, split in two-three parts, or spending too much time introducing people and not let any time for proper "action".

Arthas' movie would be a noob trap for Legendary tbh

On the contrary, Arthas is the story they SHOULD do if they ever make another movie. It's a simple story that isn't bogged down by too many characters (one of the biggest issues with the first movie). You know who the protagonist is right away, he has clear motivations, and an actual character arc. No need for excessive lore dumps or convoluted backstory that would just confuse average moviegoers.

None. Movies based on video games are never good.

LK story is mostly about the downfall of a Prince. So you need to show Arthas before all that shit, you need to show his relations with his father/Jaina/Uther who would also need quite a lot of screen time... I'm afraid that would need a huge chunk of lore to be expanded for non-Warcraft-people to understand the overall situation. To not rush the story, it would likely need to be split in two (Part 1 from "everything is OK" to Stratholme probably, and Part 2 from Stratholme onward) ? Dunno really

Castlevania has the benefit of being a miniseries. Far more characterization than a movie could ever offer. Each season is practically 2-3 movies worth of content.

Sadly the Warcraft series has too many characters to pack into each story, and it gets diluted in movie format.

i feel lke if they had started with the arthas story it wouldve been better, and then work backwards, showing more backstory etc..

instead they go with the first game, and not only that, its their own version, its not the exact same story, some shit is retconned, and that sucks tbh :/

I think the first one fell short in many regards, so I'd vote for a reboot if anything. I don't need to see that same cast again that's for sure.

Yeah, it's the downfall of a man pushed to extremes while trying to do the right thing. His relationships with Uther and Jaina are certainly important (his father not so much). You really don't need a lot of screen time to establish these characters (they're not that complex). Arthas is a young warrior prince who is confident and arrogant but generally a decent person, while Uther is his old, stern, more experienced mentor. You can establish that with less than a minute of dialogue. Jaina is a friend and sorceress joining them to solve the mystery of a zombie plague. What huge chunk of lore do you need to understand the situation?

I think you could probably fit everything from Strahnbrad to killing Mal'Ganis within a 2 hours time frame. Act 1 is establishing the characters and introducing the threat. Act 2 sees Arthas' mental breakdown as he faces the horrors of the plague, culminating in the Culling. And Act 3 is Northrend, ending with Arthas wandering off into the wastes after defeating Mal'Ganis.

No movie, give us an animated series its the only way I see it working.

    I don't think anyone that isn't a fan will find pre-WC3 interesting.
They should make a movie about Arthas, the plague and build up to him becoming the Lich King. It would resonate with a much larger audience without having to spend an entire movie building up the story.

Animated, either traditional or CGI, works for me. Much better format for telling/adapting a story of such broad scope.

Reboot, starting where the movie ended would not be good.

Also an alternative warcraft universe would be nice, fixing the lore stories that sucked and give the heroes their moments to shine and interactions that actually make sense, instead of turning heroes and villains into wow loot pinatas as raid or dungeon bosses, or just being hammered into stories with no sense at all just because the developers thought it was cool for them to be there.

Castlevania had a good result. I would be fine with such a format.

Also Dota copied the Castlevania and made a 8 or 10 episode season as well, with possible more seasons to come.

If they did a warcraft series, they should do warcraft 1 and 2 together for season 1, as the introduction season. Kalimdor and undead should go to season 2, or maybe some parallel adventures in Kalimdor (or even the sundering explained in flashbacks), where in season 2 all the stories would converge with the Legion's return.

I think the meme of Henry Cavil as Arthas would actually be a great thing. Make a movie of Golden's Arthas novel with Henry in the titular role and it would very likely be a success, because you just know that Henry as a WoW player and fantasy nerd himself would really act the shit out of this stuff.

I am not extremely attached to the idea of making a movie of the second war, the interesting stuff, the stuff that affects fans to this day really only starts with WC3, especially with Shadowlands at the moment bringing lots of characters from that era back, with Kael, Kel'thuzad and others.

But then, I am not really sure this stuff should be a movie in the first place. Not because I don't like to see the story relived, but because I strongly feel that the medium "movie" is too restrictive. Few good stories are possible to be told in the 2-3 hours a movie has and especially if it is such a big franchise. Just look at all movies made of King books, usually they suck immensely because they had to be shortened to be understandable in the few hours the movie had.

If we want a story like this told well, then we should want it in a series format over several seasons. They have tons of material to work with there and if it is succesful they could adept the story of WoW next.

I shudder at the thought that people think those movies were good... they were an atrocious violation of the franchise with only two goals: Wringing money from gaming nerds and showing off Mila's questionable acting talent (and boobs) at the expense of EVERY beloved character of the universe who were just thrown in to play the helpless damsels so super hero Mila could save them, with sometimes important names just randomly assigned to completely unconnected guys that get a 5 minute role just so the movie could claim that they had Leon, Claire, Chris and Jill.

And this is not even touching on the ridiculous incosistencies from one movie to the next, with characters just disappearing off screen, probably because the actors were fed up with Anderson writing the movies only to promote his wife. Like a parent that writes the school play just for their kid and ignores all other parts because they could detract from the "true star".

It was a disgusting display of nepotism and no one should ever allow Anderson to direct a movie again. The live-action cutscene in RE1 had more quality and heart then all those movies together.

Sorry for the rant, but as a RE and movie fan in general these tasteless abominations are just an insult to the fandom and the world would be better off if each copy of it was burned.
