3.0 out of 5 stars Great story
By Angelita H. on August 28, 2020
I love this story, my bigs used to watch the movie all the time so I thought I would buy the book for my little. We were really excited to read it until we opened the book; the pages are out of order and half the book is upside down. We will be requesting a refund.

I love this book. My son is really into the gruffalo at the moment so I got him the go ok boards for his birthday as they are more sturdy than the paper back for my toddler. Can't wait to read these to him at story time!

Arrived in perfect condition. Never seen this in a board book version before, I absolutely love it. Immediately read it to my baby who had no clue what I was saying but she smiled the whole way through. Wonderful addition to her growing bookshelf.

...or make up anyway!

A cunning little mouse is the key character as he persuades some potential predators he meets on his travels that there is a ‘Gruffalo’ in the deep dark wood. Just over half way through, the tide turns but the mouse is even more cunning!

For me, this has everything you could wish for in a story…amazing illustrations from Axel Scheffler as always, accompanied by rhyming text & a regular repeat element to all join in with.

ooOoo

Originally published back in 1999, this is the chunky board book edition (2017), which measures around 15.25 cm x 19 cm with rounded corners. The atmospheric cover has an almost 3D effect and is enhanced by shiny gold colouring around the names of the author & illustrator that catches in the change of light.
The smaller but more durable format has relatively small text but remains clear to read, in my experience.

Inside are 12 double page spreads (including the inside covers), with no loss at the front or back to title pages, etc.
Simply open the cover and the rhyming story begins.
As usual, the seemingly simple illustrations give lots to talk about, including facial expressions!
And, of course, the ending is 'good'!

A real gem with more in it than first meets the eye!

ooOoo

From the back cover:

🐁 ‘Explore the deep dark wood and discover what happened when a quick-witted mouse meets a fox, an owl, a snake and…

Oh Help!
Oh no!
A Gruffalo!’
