Estimate: £80,000 - £120,000

Description: oil on canvas laid on board

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, K.G., O.M., F.R.S., HON. R.A. | Mimizan

Estimate: £120,000 - £180,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The canvas is original. There is a very faint stretcher bar mark along the upper edge. The canvas has become worn to the extreme corners of the work, particularly at the upper left edge. There is an Artist's pinhole to the lower left corner. There are a couple of very small flecks of loss, one to the water in between the second and third trees from the left and one to the undergrowth on the nearside bank just to the left of the third tree from the left, with one or two possible smaller flecks elsewhere and one or two possible flattening to impasto tips. There are some fine lines of craquelure, visible under close inspection, in places, including in the lower third and towards the centre of the left edge, with possible further very minor instances elsewhere. There is a small scratch just below centre of the right edge and a vertical light scuff between the second and third trees from the left, most likely in keeping with the Artist's working methods. There is some surface dirt to the work. Subject to the above, the work appears in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a small number of tiny spots of isolated fluorescence and probable retouching, including to the centre of the extreme upper edge, which have been very sensitively executed. The work is held behind glass in a painted and gilt composite frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work. SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, K.G., O.M., F.R.S., HON. R.A. | Les Zoraïdes on Cap Martin

Estimate: £100,000 - £150,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The canvas appears sound. There is a very minor push to the centre of the composition. There is a pinhole apparent in the lower left corner, possibly in keeping with the Artist's techniques. There are a few tiny specks of loss in the upper left corner, only visible upon very close inspection, which may relate to Artist's pinholes. There are some very fine lines of craquelure in some isolated places, most apparent to the turquoise pigment in the right of centre and the light green pigment in the upper right corner with a few further isolated lines elsewhere. There is some studio detritus and some specks of light surface dirt and specks of staining in places to the work. Subject to the above the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Inspection under UV light reveals some fluorescence which is thought to be in keeping with the Artist's materials, as well as an uneven layer of varnish. The work is presented in a gilt frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work."In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Estimate: £250,000 - £350,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The canvas is original. The canvas undulates very slightly in the extreme lower left corner. There are some extremely fine lines of craquelure scattered throughout, with some extremely minor flecks of loss apparent in the tree canopy, in the left-hand tree, with one or two pin head sized flecks of loss in the right-hand tree. There is some slight flattening to one or two instances of raised impasto. There is some light surface dirt throughout and a thick varnish. This excepting the work appears to be in excellent overall condition. The nature of the varnish makes a reading under ultraviolet light difficult. There are scattered areas of fluorescence which appear in keeping with the Artist's materials, but one or two may relate to small associated losses. If so, these have been very sensitively executed. The work is held within a linen slip in a painted and gilt wood frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work. SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, HON. R.A. | After Daubigny

Estimate: £100,000 - £150,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The present condition report was written by Hamish Dewar 31/05/19: Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. This is providing a stable structural support. Paint surface The paint surface displays ingrained dirt and has a markedly discoloured varnish layer and should respond very well to cleaning and revarnishing. I would be confident of significant colour change as a result of the removal of the dirt and varnish layers. The paint surface is stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the discoloured and opaque varnish layer which prevents the ultraviolet light from fully penetrating. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a small retouching with associated tiny spots within the water in the lower right, and two small spots on the right part of the lower edge. Due to the opaque varnish layers it is difficult to ascertain the extent of any previous restoration work. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition. "In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

We had prepared to house the party, but at the last minute the Churchills and the Edens were invited to the Quai d Orsay. It was warmer than the Embassy..For the victory review I sat with Mesdames Churchill, Eden, de Gaulle, Catroux and Massiglin in the Ladies Tribune. We trembled with anxiety as we watched our heroes drive to the Arc de Triomphe in an open car..we held our breath as together, and in great danger, they walked half a mile down the Champs-Elyséé, to join us at the Tribune. Paris went mad . On the last evening of the visit, our Embassy opened its doors for it s first dinner-party . Attended by le Général et Madame de Gaulle, Mr and Mrs Churchill, Monsieur et Madame Bogomolov, Mr Caffrey (from Washington), the Canadian General and Madame Vanier and Monsieur et Madame Georges Bidault (Foreign Secretary. The Imperial War Museum hold a photograph of Winston Churchill and General Charles de Gaulle walking down the Avenue des Champs-Elysee during the French Armistice Day parade in Paris, dated 11 November 1944.
