Winston Churchill was a dedicated painter. At home, on holiday and even on the battlefield, his oils were rarely far from hand. This fall, the National Churchill Museum and the Kemper Art Museum are presenting one of the most significant shows of Churchill's work ever in North America.

Churchill was, of course, the dogged, cigar-chomping prime minister of Great Britain whose sheer will and determination steered his country through the darkest days of World War II. But in addition to being a statesman, writer, and orator, the old man was a gifted and prolific painter, too.

Although Churchill occasionally gave away his work, primarily to family and statesmen he admired, he could not resist attractive women asking him to part with the pieces.
