WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team advanced out of the first round of the ODAC playoffs with a 14-4 win over Guilford on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets (11-7, 6-3) were led offensively by
Logan Clingerman who found the back of the cage six times.
Bryan Berryhill and
Stephen Graham were the other Hornets who had multiple goals, each having two goals while Graham also dished out four helpers.
Tyler Held ,
Josh Boonshaft ,
Bradley Holt , and
Caleb Kelley all had goals for the Hornets in the win, with
Matt Daniel , Held, Boonshaft, and
Austin Sydnor all had assists. The Hornets also dominated in the faceoff circle winning 14 of 22 attempts with
Austin Galler leading the way going 8-15,
Jason Forchetti went 5-6, while
Ryan Therkorn won his only attempt in the circle.
Mark Isabelle once again made the start in goal and came up with 10 saves while only allowing four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Shenandoah won the opening faceoff but quickly turned the ball over on their first possession, forcing the defense to make a stop.
Guilford fired four shots, all off frame, and eventually turned the ball over due to a shot clock violation.
After the turnover, the Hornets cleared the ball and Logan Clingerman got the first tally for the Hornets off an assist from Stephen Graham .
That lead was short-lived as Guilford tied the game just four seconds later.
A minute later, the Hornets trailed for the first time, as Guilford scored again to take a 2-1 lead with 11:24 left to play in the first.
After shots from Clingerman, Matt Daniel , and Stephen Graham , and caused turnovers by Aaron Coombs and Jonathan Hammond , Tyler Held broke through and scored to tie the game at 2.
Mark Isabelle made one more save in the period to keep the game tied at 2, but Bryan Berryhill gave the Hornets a 3-2 lead with just over a minute to go in the quarter.
Both teams struggled offensively over the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, but then Guilford finally tied the game at 3 with just over four minutes to play in the half.
Once again, the Hornets took advantage of the Quakers' turnover and as Clingerman buried his second goal of the game to give Shenandoah the lead.
On the ensuing faceoff won by Galler with Dylan Pencek picking the ground ball up, Austin Sydnor and Matt Daniel both fired shots wide, but Clingerman completed the first-half hat trick on the third straight shot from the Hornets. Tyler Held found Clingerman for the goal and took a 5-3 lead into the half.
In the second half, it was all Hornets as Clingerman picked up where he left off scoring the first two goals of the third quarter with Graham assisting on both goals.
Two minutes later, Bryan Berryhill and Stephen Graham scored two more goals within a minute as the lead ballooned to 9-3.
As goals were coming in bunches, a minute later, Caleb Kelley scored an extra-man goal before Bradley Holt scored right off the next face off as the score was now 11-3 heading into the final quarter.
Shenandoah kept the pressure up as off the faceoff, the Hornets fired four straight shots, but none of them were on frame.
Josh Boonshaft scored on an ensuing play with 12 minutes left in the game after Mark Isabelle made another save.
After drawing a penalty, Clingerman capped off his fantastic afternoon with his sixth goal of the game, which came on the powerplay.
Guildford, trying to get back in the game, won the faceoff went straight down the field, and scored to cut it back to a nine-goal game. This was the first goal for the Quakers since the 4-minute mark in the second quarter.
After the Guilford goal, Mark Isabelle made the final three saves that he would face before Stephen Graham capped the game off with one more goal to secure the 14-4 win.
