Eva (Shirley MacLaine), a widow and retired history teacher, enjoys a quiet life in the tiny town of Liberty, Ohio. Everything changes when Eva receives a life insurance check accidentally made out for $5,000,000 instead of the expected $50,000. At the not-so-gentle urging of her best friend Maddie (Jessica Lange), Eva deposits the money and takes the chance it offers them to escape from small town life. Their destination is Gran Canaria and they have every intention of living it up. But their fantasy is short-lived when they awake to discover that they have become media sensations overnight and fugitives from justice, forced to outwit a trio of con men, outmaneuver a dogged insurance agent Vespucci (Howard Hesseman) who has teamed up with Eva's daughter, Crystal (Demi Moore), and outrun the law. What they don't expect is to be so good at it.
