The Burney Sisters

The sisters started singing around the house when they were barely able to walk, with some vocal coaching from Mom, they began harmonizing well before they picked up instruments. Olivia found her first love in the ukulele after finding one at a garage sale for a dollar. After a few online tutorials, she was well on her way to being the performer and teacher she is today. Currently, Olivia writes the bulk of the tunes that the sisters perform, including their single "Constellations" and the popular "Plastic", which appeared on their debut 2017 EP.

Not to be outdone by her older sister, Emma picked up the guitar at the age of 9, and began learning songs of her own. Now, she helps Olivia with all of the arrangements and harmonies and has since expanded her instrumental arsenal to include bass, banjo, keys, fiddle, and cello. Their soul nurturing sibling harmonies and tunes are reminiscent of The Avett Brothers, First Aid Kit, Indigo Girls The Staves, and The Wild Reeds.

The musical phenoms are now a heady force. With a maturity and emotional intelligence that belies their age, Olivia and Emma write keen and knowing songs while arranging for multiple instruments and structuring unique and resonant harmonies. The result—personal and penetrating songs that both connect with and captivate the listener.

Their debut 2017 EP included such gems as “Constellations” and the popular “Plastic.” Their follow up EP, “Where We Stand” was released in 2018. Their single, “Make Me Happy” (September 2019) is infused with a folk rock sound and even nuances of punk, proving that the unexpected always delights. 2 more singles “Unbearable” and “Too Familiar” were released in 2020 and the pair have been expanding their musical taste and style as they continue to hone their craft..

The Burney Sisters have played stages big and small, opening for Wynonna Judd, Lonestar, Jo Dee Messina, Larkin Poe, ‘The Voice’ alum Sawyer Fredericks and current ‘American Idol’ contestant, Emi Sunshine. Those were incredible experiences but festival stages such as Peddler’s Jamboree, Twangfest, Shwagstock, Moccasin Creek, and, most notably, Columbia’s Roots N Blues N BBQ annual festival, afford them exciting opportunities to connect with fans and meet amazing new people.

Archtop Festival Meeting & Show featuring Adam Miller

Australian international touring artist Adam Miller will be back in Arvada on Thursday, August 4th at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor for a very special performance along with master guitarists Michael Chapdelaine and Sean McGowan. The show will feature a Ken Parker archtop guitar (or two?). Parker's lifetime of work, passion and innovation building guitars is immediately obvious when you see one, but even more so when you hear one, especially in the hands of these master musicians.

Adam is making this special stop in Arvada as part of his final US tour on his current travel visa, so he will probably not be back in the US for a while, don't miss this opportunity to stop by and see him play and say hello!

Archtop Festival meeting at 7:00 PM, show at 8:00 Thursday August 4th at the Olde Town Pickin Parlor in Arvada, CO.

Pierre Bensusan Workshop at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor

The Olde Town Pickin' Parlor is excited to announce a workshop with world renowned guitarist, Pierre Bensusan.

Pierre Bensusan's workshops are open to any guitarist, from every musical horizon, who has already attained a competent technical level.

Level : intermediate, advanced

Content

Pierre addresses issues of musicianship, philosophy of music, approach to the guitar, lots of techniques, ear training and so forth. All together, it's about "Music for Guitar" in Fingerstyle, whatever the tuning. Pierre’s classes are based on a large concept which is that, whatever the style, and whether you'd like to focus on interprating, improvising or composing, we need to fulfill the process of expressing music on the instrument. This is analysed and optimized throughout the length of the class by going deep into various right hand and left hand techniques, body position, posture, exercises, ornementations, rythmic attention, tone, expression, interpretation, arranging, and so forth.

Pierre plays in DADGAD tuning but while the seminar is not about DADGAD per se, Pierre will share his experience of this tuning. As far as students reading music or tabs, it's only a small part of what goes on at the workshop but would still help if you can read at least the tablature.

Tickets for the event are $90 per attendee. Please contact the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor directly to reserve your spot.

Takeout with Jon Chandler *LIVESTREAM*

Dana will be joining me on THURSDAY, JULY 15, livestreaming from the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor in Arvada. Dana and I will be joined by old friends Timothy P. Irvin, Kit Simon, Kenny Cox and others in this grand send-off. Hope you can log in at the URL below and join us!

Our friend Dana Vernon has been part and parcel of the Colorado and national music scenes for what seems like a lifetime. His live performances are legendary, and his fantastic picking has graced literally hundreds of recording projects. The longtime guitarist for Timothy P. and Rural Route 3, Dana has also been a fixture at Jon's live performances at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor, as well as with the Rejuviniles at the iconic Little Bear Bar in Evergreen. He has traveled the country (and world) as the primary guitarist for about a million bands and lots of folks whose records you own. A country boy from the Scottsbluff, Nebraska area, he's now moving back to his Cornhusker boyhood home, and we hope you can log in on Thursday, July 15 at 7:00 Mountain Time to provide love and good wishes for his send-off. Just click on www.facebook.com/JonChandler.fanpage to log in at 7:00 p.m. mountain time on Thursday. Let's all celebrate Dana!

Bruce Foreman- The Red Guitar

The Red Guitar

Imagine receiving an invitation to a gala featuring John Coltrane, Sigmund Freud, and Faust. Bruce Forman’s “The Red Guitar” is all that more. It draws on Forman’s decades of experience as a formidable jazz guitarist and his considerable skill as a storyteller and teacher, producing a work that is greater than the sum of its dazzling parts.

A story in and about jazz, The Red Guitar showcases Bruce Forman’s genre—breaking inventiveness and his ability to improvise and create within a classical form. Enlisting the full power of the jazz idiom and integrating it with seasoned and provocative story-telling, he confronts the dilemma of artistic obsession face-to-face—by creating a work of art that simultaneously explores and demonstrates the hold that music has over its most ardent followers, the hold that poses itself as a life-or-death, must-be-solved-question to Forman and his ilk: “The Red Guitar. Do you play it…or does it play you?

See where you stand. See and hear The Red Guitar

Tickets are $15. Please call the store for tickets.

America's Soul Live with Jon Chandler *POSTPONED*

*POSTPONED*As most fans of America's Soul Live have probably surmised, Uncle Kit Simon and I have talked and decided to suspend next Tuesday's 16th anniversary show at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor. We've been getting a lot of queries from audience members and want to make sure everyone in our ASL family is comfortable and safe. We'll celebrate the show's 16th anniversary on Tuesday, April 21 with a wonderful lineup of guests celebrating the beginning of our 17th season. Oh, and there will be cake. Take care, friends, and we'll see you shortly.

America's Soul Live's first show at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor was in March 2004.  Now, a couple of hundred shows later, we feel fortunate to continue this iconic series in such a wonderful musical setting.  Our March 17, 2020 show will feature special guests who span ASL's first 16 years, with Jon, Ernie and Johnny welcoming a lineup of performers who have been important to the show's success.  We'll keep the lineup a surprise for now, but make sure you don't miss this one!  As always, reservations are strongly suggested.  Hope to see you on March 17.  Oh, and cake will be served.

America's Soul Live with Jon Chandler

We have a really special ASL coming up on Tuesday, February 18, when Jim and Vickie Jones join us before pickin' up and moving to Tennessee. Jim & Vickie have spent the past couple of decades making friends and fans throughout Colorado with their duo, as well as with their stellar folk/rock band Reckless Abandon and their kick-butt retro-rock band The ReJuveniles. Vickie is one of the finest vocalists in the land, while Jim not only sings like a bird but picks like an angel, as well. They've decided to retire to Tennessee, which is our loss, but the Volunteer State's gain. Come on out to wish Vickie and Jim well and to have a musical night to remember. As always, reservations are strongly suggested.

Chuck Pyle Finger-Style Guitar Workshop taught by Jeff Troxel transcriber of Keepin’ Time with Chuck Pyle Songbook.

“Chuck Pyle’s unique guitar style was woven so deeply into his songs that they almost can’t be separated. If you’ve always wanted to know how Chuck created his unique “loping” style, this is a workshop that shouldn’t be missed. As the music transcriber for Keepin’ Time with Chuck Pyle, Jeff Troxel literally wrote the book on this style. In this workshop, Jeff will deconstruct and teach the techniques Chuck used to create some of his most popular songs.”

America's Soul Live

This month's America's Soul Live (Tuesday, May 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor in Arvada, CO) will be a dandy. Our good friend Mark Cormican will join us, and we'll present, for the first time at ASL, the fantastic duo of Tony Ortega and Gary Shoe. Kentucky native Mark is a veteran singer/songwriter who performs nationally, and is one of Colorado's acoustic music gems. His fondness for folk-themed tunes shows up in his original work, as well as his tributes to John Denver. Tony and Gary are lifelong friends who have been writing and performing songs together for decades. Colorado Country Music Hall of fame member Tony is one of Denver's true string wizards, having recorded and performed on guitar and pedal steel with everyone from the Kingston Trio to Hargus "Pig" Robbins. Gary is a marvelous songwriter whose affinity for Colorado and its history has resulted in several albums of original material. Together, they'll be performing new songs along with old favorites. A fine, fine show in the works, all right. As usual, reservations are suggested.
