In as much as Lagos is looked at as a prospering state, the local governments in Lagos state are not the highest when it comes to the number of local governments in the country.

In my previous article on local government in Nigeria and their functions, I stated clearly that these governments play an important role in the Nigerian government structure, as they’re the closest to us.

For effective administration of resources in the country, partitioning has been the way to go, from division into states, to local governments and their wards.

Local governments are the closest government to us. It is easier to reach the Local government than it is to the State governments, talk less of the Federal government.

The local government areas in Nigeria are subdivisions of the states created to bring the government benefits closer to the people, also to ensure an effective administration of resources.

Local governments in Lagos state did not start at twenty; history tells of how these local governments in Lagos state came into existence and play a vital role in the Nigerian government structure.

Tales by moonlight tell of the migration of a certain number of people from Ile – Ife to settle on the coast, they were called the Aworis.

Around the 1300 – 1400 CE; a complaint was made to the Oba of the Benin Empire, by one of his traders, of how he had been mistreated by the inhabitants of Eko. Learn more about the history of Nigeria

The Oba of Benin would not allow this slide and so embarked on a mission to confirm this complaint. Unfortunately, the Aworis attacked this mission.

The Oba felt insulted by this village that did not have local governments not to talk of local governments in Lagos state. He declared war on the Aworis and a war journey, led by Prince Ado, was embarked on.

On getting to Eko, the prince demanded an explanation, the Aworis then pleaded with the prince to stay with them and be their leader.

Prince Ado accepted their request to be their leader not minding there were not up to 20 local governments in Lagos state.

Lagos, formerly known as Eko, was created on the 27^th of May, 1967. As of today, there are 20 local governments in Lagos state and it is no doubt one of the most developed states in Nigeria.

Below is the list of local government areas in Lagos state their chairman.

1. Agege Local Government Area

Although created in the year 1954, Agege is one of the Lagos local government areas. It is a local government in Lagos state, in Ikeja division.

Prominent places in Agege local government area include Lagos State University (LASU) campus, and NYSC permanent orientation camp, Iyana – Ipaja road, Agege.

3. Alimosho

Alimosho, one of the local governments in Lagos state, was created in the year 1945. The egbados are said to dominate this local government area.

Celebrations identified with this area include the Oro (curfew), Egungun (masquerade), and Igunnu festivals which are celebrated every year.

4. Amuwo – Odofin

This is also one of the local governments in Lagos state and is dominated by the Aworis.

5. Apapa

Apapa, popularly known as the location of Lagos’s port, is one of the local governments in Lagos state. The Kirikiri maximum security prison is also located in this area.

6. Badagry

Badagry is another one of the local governments in Lagos state. History of Badagry tells of a European trader, locally known as Yovo Huntokonu, who established a trading port around the year 1736; this pioneered the growth of Badagri’s main town as a Centre of trade.

Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman was said to be the first preacher of the Christian religion in Nigeria, Badagry to be precise.

7. Epe

Epe is one of the local governments in Lagos state contributing its quota to boosting the economy of the state. It is famous for the exportation of coconuts, fish, firewood, etc from the state to other states in the country.

Ikeja, Capital of Lagos, is the richest local government in Lagos state. It covers a landmass of 49.92km²

It shelters over 400 companies, top companies, industries, small-medium enterprises among others inclusive.

It is also the second richest local government in the country. It houses the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Sheraton Hotel, Femi Kuti’s African Shrine, Lagbaja’s Motherland, Computer Village, Ikeja City Mall, and many others.

At this point, you may start to wonder, what is the population of Lagos state, isn’t it?

Lagos state population is huge!

Lagos State has a population of 9,013,534 in accordance to the National count of 140,003,542 a few years ago.

However, based on the UN-Habitat and international development agencies’ estimates, Lagos State is said to have about 24.6 million inhabitants in 2015.

From this huge population of Lagos, Metropolitan Lagos accounts for over 85% on an area that is 37% of the land area of the State.

The fact that Lagos state population is growing 10 times faster than that of New York and Los Angeles, and more than the population of 32 African nations combined, the State population is expected to hit the 35 million mark in 2020.

There is no gainsaying that the population of Lagosians has boosted the Lagos state economy over the years.
