Current Living Former Prime Ministers, Premiers And Chief Ministers

The tables on this page show the full lists of living former heads of government in Australia.

There are 71 former prime ministers, premiers and chief ministers still living, as of December 22, 2023.

All seven former prime ministers since Paul Keating assumed the office in 1991 are still living.

Nine former Premiers of NSW since Barrie Unsworth took office in 1988 are still living, as are all seven former premiers of Western Australia since Brian Burke took office in 1983.

The death of former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Ian Tuxworth, on January 21, 2020, was the first death a chief minister since 1970, the longest period of government in any state or territory where all former leaders were still alive.

The oldest former leader is Steele Hall, 95, the South Australian premier (1968-70) who subsequently served in the Senate (1974-77) and the House of Representatives (1981-96).

The second oldest former leader is NSW premier Barrie Unsworth, 90.

The youngest members on the lists are former Northern Territory chief ministers Adam Giles, 51, and Michael Gunner, 48, and former Tasmanian premier Lara Giddings, 51.
