California 2022 gubernatorial race: Dahle to face Newsom in general election governor's race

Brian Dahle, a Republican who represents the North State in the California Senate will face Gov. Gavin Newsom in the general election in November.
The longshot candidate led a field of 25 challengers, putting him first in line to face Newsom.
By 10 p.m., Newsom, a Democrat, had just over 60% of the vote compared to Dahle's 15.6%, according to the California Secretary of State's website.

Republican Brian Dahle garnered 22% of the vote in early results Tuesday.
As expected, Gov. Gavin Newsom bolted out to a commanding lead with 55% of the vote.

Though he entered the race late, announcing his candidacy for California governor only four months ago, Republican state Sen. Brian Dahle has a chance to advance from Tuesday’s primary to the general election in November.
That would mean a likely showdown with Gov. Gavin Newsom, where Dahle’s chances appear slim.
When he announced in February during a rally at the Redding Civic Auditorium, Dahle himself likened his challenge against Newsom as David versus Goliath.
"I'm a farmer from Bieber. You might say I'm the underdog," Dahle told the crowd of several hundred people. "Well, I've been the underdog in every race I've ever won."
And at least one poll shows that Newsom is likely to be re-elected, less than a year after convincingly staving off an attempted recall.
A June 3 poll from the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies shows Newsom has the support of 50% of likely voters. Dahle, his closest competitor, is at 10%.
Dahle is among 13 Republicans running. But Dahle has earned the endorsement of the California Republican Party.
Another North State Republican running is Jenny Rae Le Roux, who also ran in last September's attempted recall. The business owner lives near Shasta College, just outside the Redding city limits, with her family on a 181-acre hobby ranch.
Dahle has railed against the state’s “one-party rule” where Democrats have controlled the Legislature for years.
He blames current policies for driving people out of California.
Dahle bemoans California’s high cost of living. High utility bills, gasoline prices and taxes are among the costs that put a burden on families, he says.
Dahle served on the Lassen County Board of Supervisors for 16 years before spending six years as an assemblyman starting in 2012. He joined the state Senate in 2019 and his wife, Megan, was elected to fill his Assembly seat.
