James laid out this cemetery in his pasture, saying it was "for the use of my family and friends." The oldest existing grave marker is dated 1835, although James and his family moved here from Tennessee in 1830.

James was the son of Reuben and Mary (Goforth Hudson) Gunn. His father was born in Europe, probably Germany, and arrived at the port of Charleston, SC, in 1754. He is listed on the DAR Patriot's Roll of Honor for his service during the American Revolution. His wife Mary is apparently also eligible for the Roll for her service of selling supplies to the Continental Army.

James married Ursula Sweeney 18 December 1806. She was the daughter of Bernard and Frances (Walker) Sweeney. Bernard was a tailor, and came to American as a British soldier during the Revolution. He died during the War of 1812 when he was fighting on the American side. Ursula's twin sister, Sarah Sweeney, married James' younger brother John Gunn, and the two couples are buried side-by-side in this cemetery.

James and Ursula had 10 children who lived to adulthood: Mary, who married William Bruce; Alexander S., married to Mary "Polly" Wright; John W., married first to Nancy Huston and and later to Mary Amalia Vetter; Lucinda, wife of James J. Dikis; Nancy Jane, married to Porter Story; Jesse C., married first to Mary Ann Fisher, then to Hannah I. Reaugh; Abisha, married to Mary Hughes; Reuben Walker, married to Julia E. Guthrie; Joseph D., married to Margaret E. Fisher; and Bernard William, married first to Deborah Wright and later to Mrs. Elizabeth Stevenson.
