Fabio Frizzi on the “Mystical Experience” of Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond: The Composer’s Cut’ [Interview]

I opened the gates of Hell with the influential Italian maestro to discuss the project, which is playing in select theaters throughout the month, along with honoring Lucio Fulci, his next Composer’s Cut, and more. Read on for my complete interview with Fabio Frizzi!

The Beyond: The Composer’s Cut brings a new version of Lucio Fulci classic to theatres
Forty-one years after director Lucio Fulci‘s film The Beyond (watch it Here) was released and embraced as a classic by many horror fans, a new version of the movie is now about to make its way out to theatres across the United States. This new version of The Beyond is called The Composer’s Cut because it features a brand new score composed by Fabio Frizzi – who also composed the movie’s original score.

Starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar, The Beyond shows what happens when a young woman inherits an old hotel only to find it sits atop a gateway to Hell and all manner of creatures lurk in the darkness.

The film is the second entry in Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy, which began with City of the Living Dead and ended with The House by the Cemetery.

Review: Lucio Fulci's
Normal 0 false false false En-gb X-none X-none

By Adrian Smith

When film fans hear the name of Italian director Lucio Fulci, it almost inevitably brings to mind his oft-quoted moniker as the “Godfather of Gore,” thanks to the films made towards the end of his career that caused so much trouble with the British film censors; Zombie Flesh Eaters (1980), The Beyond (1981) New York Ripper (1983) being some of the most notorious. To view him as such however is to miss out on what was an extraordinarily prolific career which also included musicals, comedies, westerns, historical dramas, fantasy films, science fiction and thrillers. This new Blu-ray and digital release of The Psychic, out now in a 2K restoration from Shameless Films, is an opportunity to reassess one of his less well known films, which is only now being released in the UK for the first time.

Made famous by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, Giallo (an Italian term) movies are murder mystery/horror thriller affairs that have always had a cult following. Unfortunately, there are very few modern Giallo movies made so I was pleased to see Nightmare Symphony get a release… and be able to review it!

Nightmare Symphony, a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions; follows a director attempting to finish making his film while someone or something is killing off the people trying to finance and help him make it.

Perhaps what Nightmare Symphony does best is

By Darren Allison

Cineploit records have announced their two latest releases for 2020; Lawa “The Parallax View“ (Cine 23) and Pan/Scan “Kosmonauter” (Cine 24).

It’s particularly good to have Lawa back. On “The Parallax View” (not related to the 1970s conspiracy movie classic), they take a ride through French and Italian cinema score of the 70s and 80s from the works of Michel Colombier, Michel Legrand and Jacques Revaux to Alessandro Alessandroni, Daniele Patucchi, Nico Catanese, G & M de Angelis and the master of them all, Ennio Morricone. There are also some original compositions and concepts from Lawa which fit seamlessly into the impressive playlist. Once again they are honouring the world of film music in their idiosyncratic, very personal way. After their first Cineploit release, "Omaggio a Lucio Fulci and Fabio Frizzi“ and the follow up, "Omaggio a Riz Ortolani“, these latest very

Notebook Soundtrack Mix #10: The Black Belly of Giallo
Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the
