Plan help for end of October beginning November

We are flying from Australia via London to Oslo end of October. We plan to spend 2-3 days in Oslo then fly to Bergen and hire a car possibly and drive to Alesund and Trodheim. Any recommendations on where to stay in between. We then plan to go to lofoten but not sure the best way to get there? Fly somewhere and hire another car?

Then want to head to tromso.

My husband is Norwegian and hasn’t been back in 30 years and this is first for me.

Any itinerary help would be appreciated as nothing is set yet.

How many days do you have all together?

In Norway there is a substantial fee for dropping off the car in another city, please check that out. October/November is probably not the best time to drive through Norway, but if there’s sunshine it can be lovely.

Have you considered Hurtigruten or Havila ferry cruise? The companies alternate on which day they sail along the coast. It’s not cheap, but you don’t have to book accommodation.

You can take port to port and jump off in places and jump on later. Since you only mention cities, maybe a good idea. You can do this all the way to Tromsø if you want to.

I suppose by flying to Bergen, you would like to visit some fjord area. If so, rent a car and do around trip before flying to Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport for the Lofoten Islands for a second car rental. This is well into the late autumn/winter season, there can be severe storms and challenging driving conditions.

You could also consider reversing your itinerary by flying to Tromsø from Oslo.

Rather than flying Oslo to Bergen consider either direct train which will be very scenic over the mountain plateau and you’ll get an idea of driving conditions. In November you hardly need to book a hire car in advance. You could also take the Norway in a Nutshell tour but then you would have to stay a night in Flåm to get the fjord cruise in daylight next morning.

You could also take Hurtigruten/Havila coastal steamer to Ålesund and Trondheim.

Do remember November is full winter and days beginning to be short and hardly ideal time for a road trip.

In winter it may be better use of your time to stay longer in Tromsø.

10 days for Oslo, Lofoten and fjords would be on the short side given the distances. Going to Lofoten will involve two transit days and probably yet anoter night in Oslo before flying out.

Most of Norway is scenic, but highlights like fjords and Lofoten are rural, not much in terms of art and architecture. The scenery is the king.

Bergen is probably a good choice for you with good art museums, lots of history, historical buildings and lots of charm.

Need input on how to streamline your visit to make the most of your time frame.
