There’s a major problem with suburbia that many films attempt to critique and study, yet few are able to accomplish with as much power and success as Little Children. While smaller towns appear to have less containment than larger cities due to their spacing and density, the fewer number of people has more of an impact than you’d assume. Each action, whether it’s explicitly illegal or unimportantly embarrassing, has an everlasting effect on you and will never be forgotten. There’s rarely a feeling of catharsis as those who belong to the community are trapped in an ongoing cycle of shame and misfortune that may only have been started by one, mindless act.

Having seen around two-thirds of Field's films, it is abundantly clear that the director possesses a remarkable talent for writing these intriguing pictures with intricate subject matter in a way that is packed with such nuance-laden characters, especially the more damaged or tormented the better. The writing on these characters, ranging from a famous but also somewhat narcissistic composer to a paedophile, and the extraordinary performances the filmmaker manages to elicit from these performers are nothing short of phenomenal. There are also stories where everything is resolved with a karmic blow or a moralistic lesson that rings true.
