2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Overview

Is the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid a Good Used Car?

The 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid is a fine choice if you're shopping for a used hybrid car. The Fusion Hybrid offers a lot of value and refinement, from its spacious interior and an easy-to-use touch screen to its many driver assistance features and poised handling. The Fusion scores highly for predicted reliability and crash safety, and used models are among the cheapest cars to buy in this class.

That said, the Fusion Hybrid's trade-off is that it isn't as fuel-efficient as chief rivals like the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid , 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid , and 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid . It also has a small trunk.

Which Used Ford Fusion Hybrid Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid comes in three trims: SE, SEL, and Titanium. All are outfitted with the same hybrid system, which can return an EPA-estimated 42 mpg overall.

The base SE trim is a good option for most shoppers because it comes loaded with standard tech and safety features. On the other hand, you should upgrade to the Titanium trim if you want amenities like leather upholstery and ventilated seats.

What Does Ford's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Ford offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 80,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For these certified pre-owned vehicles, Ford extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years from the original sale date or 100,000 miles. These vehicles also get a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty after the original three-year/36,000-mile new-car warranty expires. Each Ford CPO vehicle must pass a 172-point inspection. Additional benefits like vehicle history reports, towing, and roadside assistance may be available.

Ford's CPO program is about average compared with other affordable carmakers. According to our analysis, Honda, Kia and Chevy have better programs, while Mazda, Jeep and Subaru fare worse.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Safety

Score: 9.3/10

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2020 Ford Fusion the highest rating of Good in the five crash tests conducted. However, the Fusion received the lowest rating of Poor for how well its headlights illuminate the road ahead.

The IIHS uses a different scale for grading collision avoidance features. The Ford Fusion earned the highest rating of Superior for its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Fusion Hybrid an overall safety rating of five out of five stars. The Fusion received five stars in the side crash test, as well as four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests.

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Forward collision warning

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Versus the Competition

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid vs. 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Fusion Hybrid is a good car, but the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid takes things to the next level. The Camry Hybrid returns much higher fuel economy – up to 52 mpg in its thriftiest configuration versus the Ford’s 43 mpg – and its extra power makes it feel peppier to drive. The Toyota’s interior is ritzier, and there's more cargo space. The Camry also offers a wider range of driver assistance features like adaptive headlights and a surround-view parking camera system. The catch is that Camry Hybrid models are typically more expensive to buy. If you've got room in your budget though, the Toyota is the better pick.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid vs. 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid

It's a similar story with the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid . The Accord Hybrid gets better gas mileage than its Fusion rival (48 mpg versus 42 mpg), and it accelerates with more authority. The Honda’s cabin has a higher level of fit and finish, and its trunk space is more generous. Notably, both sedans have a similarly large suite of active safety features. As before, a used Fusion Hybrid is apt to be less expensive, but the Accord Hybrid is the better overall vehicle.

2020 Fusion Hybrid Performance

How Does the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Drive?

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is enjoyable to drive for the most part. The hybrid powertrain enables swift initial acceleration, thanks to the wealth of torque from the electric motor, and it briskly shuttles the car around town. Throttle response is quick, and – apart from the occasional judder – the transmission does a fine job of blending the gas and electric power sources. The hybrid system begins to feel sluggish on steep hills and when passing another vehicle on the highway. The gas engine also sounds rather buzzy under hard acceleration. Both critiques are fairly typical for this class.

The Fusion Hybrid has quick steering and a taut suspension, which gives it a sprightly and athletic demeanor. It remains stable and surefooted around turns, and most bumps and dips in the road are soaked up comfortably. That said, the brakes are less refined. They provide strong stopping power, but the pedal feels initially soft, which can make it difficult to stop smoothly.

  • Powertrain: 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor with a combined 188 horsepower
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: continuously variable automatic (CVT)
2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Gas Mileage

The Fusion Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. That's great gas mileage by midsize sedan standards, although smaller hybrid cars like the 2020 Toyota Prius and 2020 Honda Insight can return far better fuel economy.

2020 Fusion Hybrid Interior

2020 Fusion Hybrid Interior Quality

The Ford Fusion Hybrid sports a cleanly styled interior with numerous soft-touch plastics and padded surfaces. The cabin muffles most road and wind noise, resulting in a quiet ride. Overall, the Fusion doesn't look or feel as upscale as the luxe 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid , but it's a marked step up from the 2020 Toyota Prius .

How Many People Does the 2020 Fusion Hybrid Seat?

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a four-door sedan with five seats. The front seats are nicely cushioned and supportive, and they provide all-day comfort. There's generous head- and legroom upfront as well. The rear seats are comfy, and they can accommodate two adults or three kids with wiggle room to spare. However, 6-footers may find rear headroom slim. Outward visibility is good to the front and sides of the Fusion, and it's decent to the rear.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Power-adjustable driver’s seat

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid?

The Fusion Hybrid has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The IIHS gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The tether anchors are set too deeply in the seats and may be difficult to maneuver around.

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Features

The Fusion Hybrid is outfitted with Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system. The 8-inch touch screen isn't particularly flashy, as far as graphics are concerned, but it is very user-friendly. The system responds quickly to inputs, the menus are straightforward, and the on-screen icons are large and easy to find. Physical buttons for the audio and climate controls, as well as a large volume knob, make it a cinch to adjust these functions while driving.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, two USB ports, satellite radio, a nine-speaker stereo, and a Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Available infotainment features : HD Radio and 11- and 12-speaker stereo systems
  • Additional standard features: dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, and remote start
  • Other available features: ambient lighting and a moonroof

2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid Dimensions

Ford Fusion Hybrid Cargo Space

The Fusion Hybrid has 12 cubic feet of trunk space. That's less than what most other vehicles in the hybrid and electric car class offer. This is largely due to the location of the battery pack, which creates a sizable hump in the trunk floor. There's enough room for a pair of carry-on suitcases and a set of golf clubs, but not much else. On the plus side, the rear seats can fold, making it easier to fit the occasional long item.
