Democrat Sydney Kamlager clinched a landslide victory in a special election Tuesday to fill an open California Assembly seat in parts of Los Angeles, Culver City and Inglewood.

Kamlager, president of the L.A. Community College Board of Trustees, had 68.9 percent of the votes. By winning an outright majority, Kamlager avoids a runoff.

Democrat Tepring Piquado (14.4 percent) and Republican Glen Ratfliff (13 percent) were second and third.

Kamlager quickly received Twitter congratulations from L.A.-area politicians.

Three Democrats and one Republican were running to replace Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, who resigned his Assembly seat at the end of 2017, citing persistent medical problems following a series of operations. Ridley-Thomas, a Democrat, is the son of Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Democrats outnumber Republicans by a lopsided 62.3 percent to 9.0 percent (with 24.2 percent declaring no party preference) in the district’s latest voter registration report.

With Kamlager holding leads in fundraising and endorsements, the question as the day began appeared to be whether the race would require a runoff.

Once sworn in, she will serve until Dec. 3.

Kamlager also is an aide to state Sen. Holly Mitchell. Ratcliff is a small business owner. Piquado is a neuroscientist and a Rand Corporation policy analyst.

Also on the ballot was Democrat Grayson Pangilinan, a 23-year-old green energy entrepreneur.

The special election was one of three Tuesday to fill vacancies in California Assembly seats representing parts of Los Angeles County. The other two were forced by the resignations of San Fernando Valley Democrats Raul Bocanegra and Matt Dababneh following accusations of sexual misconduct.
