In the mood for a dreamy period piece? The new series, The Pursuit of Love, completely fits the bill. Sprawling English estates? Check. Torrid love affairs? Check. Pastel formalwear? Check. Lily James lounging in a bathtub? Check, multiple times. The Emily Mortimer-written and directed series is an adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel and focuses on the relationship between two cousins, Linda Radlett (Lily James) and Fanny Logan (Emily Beecham). Over the course of the three-part series, the girls grow up together, experiencing love and heartbreak, and push up against the constraints of their era. Linda is the wild, eccentric cousin, with an aristocratic family trying to pressure her into conforming to societal norms. Her foil is Fanny, well-educated and raised by her aunt after her mother's consistent abandonment. Fanny is more willing to acquiesce to her lot in life, but lusts after Linda's liberation.

The series' star-studded cast includes James and Beecham, of course, but also features Andrew Scott (of Fleabag and Sherlock fame) as an eccentric lord and Dominic West (who'll be taking over as Prince Charles in season 5 of the The Crown) as Matthew, Linda's overbearing father. Keep reading to compare and contrast the characters to their real-life counterparts.

The Cinderella and Downton Abbey actress plays heroine Linda Radlett, an aristocrat who spent her early life locked in her father's estate, unable to socialize or receive an education. She is impulsive, charismatic, and wild, fighting for true love at all costs and distinctly does not fit into the shape of womanhood carved out for women of her station.

Emily Beecham as Fanny Logan

Beecham is best known for her role in Hail Caesar! and her critically acclaimed titular part in the 2017 British drama film, Daphne. Fanny is one of The Pursuit of Love's two main characters, but also the series' narrator, who was raised by an aunt who valued education, sending her to school. Fanny, a far more conservative and reserved personality, spent holidays with the Radletts and developed a lifelong near-sisterhood with Linda.

Andrew Scott as Lord Merlin

Scott plays Merlin, the Radlett's neighbor known for his eccentricity, and wild parties filled with artists of all kinds. He even keeps horses in his dining room. Merlin sees a kindred spirit in Linda and the pair become close friends. Viewers will recognize Scott from his iconic roles as Hot Priest in Fleabag and Moriarty in Sherlock.

Emily Mortimer as Fanny’s mother, The Bolter

The successful actress (fans may know her from The Newsroom) not only wrote and directed the series, but also appears as The Bolter, Fanny's mother. Fanny and the Radletts gave her mother this nickname because, to put it simply, she always "bolted" on Fanny, leaving with new men. As she grows up, Fanny strives to be the polar opposite of her mother.

Dominic West as Matthew Radlett

The star of The Affair plays Linda's father Matthew (referred to by Fanny as Uncle Matthew). Matthew is exceedingly strict and keeps his children locked up in his expansive ancestral home. He does not believe women need educations, so his daughters do not attend school.

Dolly Wells as Sadie Radlett

Sadie essentially goes along with her overbearing husband, Matthew, and conforms to traditional female roles. Dolly Wells, a British actress, plays the Radlett matriarch. Wells is best known for her role co-writing and starring in the series Doll & Em, alongside close friend Emily Mortimer.

Latif most recently starred in the CBS All Access television series, Star Trek: Discovery. Here, he plays Alfred Wincham, an intellectual Brit who eventually marries Fanny. The pair have many children, though Fanny feels constrained by her role in the family.
