It may not have been a goal-fest, but that was an enthralling affair from start to finish.

Mane has come back to haunt Egypt again just two months after breaking their hearts at AFCON, ending an unusual shootout by stroking home from the spot to book Senegal's ticket to Qatar.

Senegal fans have invaded the pitch to celebrate with their heroes, who are being rushed away by security. Remarkable night.

It's deja vu as Sadio Mane tucks home the winning penalty against Egypt to send Senegal to the World Cup! 

The Liverpool winger slams his effort straight down the middle and wheels away in jubilation.

He was the hero in the AFCON final and takes on that role once again in the World Cup playoffs. Penny for the thoughts of Reds team-mate Salah...

Mendy keeps out Mohamed to leave the hosts on the brink of victory! If they score next Senegal are on their way to Qatar.

Both teams seemed to have found their rhythm now, as Dieng sends El Shenawy the wrong way and places the ball high into the opposite corner.

El Soleya's shot flies into the top-left corner off the crossbar to level proceedings.

Finally, at the time fifth time of asking, someone scores from 12 yards. Sarr sends El Shenawy the wrong way to give Senegal the lead.

What on earth is going on?! Zizo sends his attempt wide of Mendy's left post and we're still yet to see someone find the back of the net. Crazy.

This shootout has got off to a woeful start, with El Shenawy getting down to his right to deny Ciss. We're still waiting for a successful spot-kick.

Salah then steps up for Egypt and blazes his shot over the bar! Incredible stuff.

It's the hosts who will get us started in this shootout. Koulibaly is the first man up for Senegal.

It's full time in extra time, and that means Senegal and Egypt will settle the latest instalment of their gripping rivalry via the lottery of penalties again.

Senegal had some glorious opportunities, particularly in the first half of that 30-minute period, but as is usually the case both sets of teams seemed to be thinking of penalties as it drew to a close.

They will now devise their spot-kick orders and gear up for a crucial moment in their respective countries' history. So much is riding on this!

Meanwhile, Nabil Emad also enters the book.

Another Egypt player goes down and again the stretchers are rushed back out. Pharaohs stars aren't best pleased and urge them to get off the field.

Amid the substitution, Mohamed picks up a booking for a protest which is currently a bit of a mystery.

The stretchers are out once more but this time they are well required, as Hamdi Fathi appears to be knocked out cold after taking a knee to the head from Matar Sarr. He is therefore replaced by Mahmoud Alaa.

Let's hope the medical team can work their magic there and ensure Fathi emerges unscathed.

A knackered Idrissa Gueye hobbles off and is replaced by Pape Matar Sarr.

Fattoh is down for Egypt and the stretchers are back out. The physios have covered quite a lot of ground themselves tonight.

Despite being escorted off the field, Fattoh is shortly able to re-enter the fray.

Sarr wins a free-kick for the hosts over on the right-hand side and it is taken quickly, but Gueye's shot from distance is skied well over the bar. Waste.

Pape Gueye almost edges Senegal in front, driving a lethal low effort narrowly wide of the post at the start of this second half.

Elsewhere, Ghana have booked their place in Qatar thanks to the away-goal rule.

Partey's strike for the Black Stars proved the difference in their 1-1 draw with Nigeria, who were unable to edge themselves in front.

Koulibaly pings a brilliant long pass over to Mane on the left flank and the Liverpool star's cross flies dangerously across Egypt's box before going out for a throw-in.

Senegal are well and truly on top here. Egypt desperately need to take the sting out of this game.

Senegal started the second half brightly, before Zizo's introduction sparked life into the visitors.

Almost two months since Senegal prevailed on penalties in the Africa Cup Of Nations final, these two nations are 30 minutes away from settling another tie from the spot. 

Sarr puts an inviting cross into the box and Cisse's attempt at a header goes wide. The hosts are ramping up the pressure late on.

We've got three minutes of added time here in Senegal before extra-time is upon us. Can anyone find a last-gasp winner?

Koulibaly gives away an unnecessary corner, clearing behind despite the ball heading straight into the hands of Mendy.

Egypt fail to make anything count from the resulting corner, but it eventually finds Zizo back on the left-hand side... and the substitute comes close again!

The midfielder weaved his way into the box and sent his shot narrowly wide. He's making a difference for Egypt here.

The visitors almost draw level as Salah curls in a delightful ball straight to the head of substitute Zizo, whose effort whistles past Mendy's left post. 

Best chance yet for Egypt.

There are three more substitutions for Egypt; Trezeguet, Mohamed Elneny and Marmoush are off, with Zizo, Nabil Emad, Mostafa Mohamed on.

The hosts make their first change as Bouna Sarr is replaced by Bamba Dieng.

Senegal are awarded the most dangerous free-kick of the game so far, only for Gueye to send his attempt at goal from the edge of the D over the bar.

Salah loses the ball on the halfway line and Senegal break, with Sarr finding Mane on the edge of the box.

Mane drives forward, moves to his left and pulls the trigger, but his shot is blocked. 

After an unsuccessful Egypt free-kick, Senegal burst down the other end and feel they should have a penalty when Dia goes down in the box twice.

Mane is leading the Senegal protests, but the referee is not having any of it.

First big chance of the game for Egypt as Ahmed Fattoh is released through on goal, but his shot is kept out by Mendy and the ball eventually goes behind for a goal kick.

Fattoh remains on the floor after going down under a challenge, and following a brief VAR check for a potential red card - with a possible Senegal elbow assessed - and a slight skirmish between the two teams we're back underway.

The second half has started just as wildly as the first ended.

I think we all need a lie down after that opening 45 minutes.

It was frantic from the first whistle up until the last; we've had fouls, injuries, objects thrown from the crowd, lasers, bust-ups, chances... albeit only one goal so far!

Senegal got it and will feel the happier of the two sides heading into the break. Egypt grew into it, but the hosts were more threatening and will fancy their chances of adding another after the interval.

And the African champions have come close again!

It was a superb, free-flowing move from Senegal which started in their own penalty area and ended with Egypt's Amr El Soleya clearing the ball narrowly over his own crossbar.

They've created the better chances in this first half by a country mile. 

Senegal almost add a second to move themselves ahead on aggregate, with Nampalys Mendy unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the box just past the post.

The visitors are upping the ante here, and after earning a corner Marmoush overhits an effort to the back post. Senegal then clear and eventually win a throw-in.

Frustrating half for Egypt so far, but they've certainly grown into it.

Egypt are forced into another early change here as the injured Rabia comes off for Emam Ashour.

Rabia is the first man to go into the book tonight after bringing down Sarr on the touchline.

The hosts dispossess Egypt and embark on a counter-attack, but Ismaila Sarr's looping effort from the edge of the box is collected comfortably by El Shenawy.

Egypt have been forced into an early substitution, with Omar Gaber leaving the field on a stretcher. Ayman Ashraf replaces him.

Meanwhile, Nigeria have equalised in their playoff against Ghana, with William Troost-Ekong scoring from the penalty spot.

Egypt advance into the opposition box for the first time, but Trézéguet is unable to keep the ball in play and the brief chance goes begging. 

While Senegal are still looking pretty comfortable here, their early onslaught has faded slightly.

Unsavoury scenes as Egypt goalkeeper El Shenawy is struck by a water bottle from the home crowd after diving to collect the ball near the byline. A green laser is also being shined on visiting players and coaches. 

Over in the other early CAF World Cup qualifier, Ghana have taken the lead away at Nigeria. Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has given the visitors liftoff.

Egypt need to weather a storm here early on. Senegal have started like a house on fire and the atmosphere is electric. They're up for this!
