Sadio Mane sends Senegal to the World Cup as they beat Egypt - and Mo Salah - on penalties AGAIN... while Ghana and Cameroon both squeeze through on away goals and will be joined by Morocco and Tunisia in Qatar

  • Senegal beat Egypt on penalties again to book their place at the 2022 World Cup
  • Liverpool's Sadio Mane fired home the winning spot-kick for Senegal once more
  • He did the same when the two nations collided in February's AFCON showpieceĀ
  • Ghana also beat Nigeria on away goals to secure their ticket to Qatar this yearĀ

Sadio Mane delivered the winning spot kick as Senegal edged Egypt 3-1 on penalties at the end of a tempestuous World Cup playoff second leg in Dakar on Tuesday to win a place at the finals in Qatar later this year.

Boulaye Dia scored in the fourth minute as Senegal won the second leg 1-0 for a 1-1 aggregate draw at the new Diamniadio Olympic Stadium, which was packed with a capacity 50,000 crowd hours before kickoff.

The nerve-filled shootout started with four misses, including from both captains - Kalidou Koulibaly and then Mohamed Salah - but Mane won the shootout, reprising his heroics in last month's Africa Cup of Nations final.

Egypt had netted a fourth-minute goal last Friday in the first leg in Cairo but that advantage was quickly eroded on Tuesday.

Idrissa Gana Gueye's free kick was cleared in the wrong direction by Egypt defender Ahmed Fattouh, straight into the path of Dia, who needed two attempts to bundle it over from close range.

Earlier in the evening,Ā Thomas Partey's strike via a goalkeeper error helped Ghana secure a 1-1 draw with hosts Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday, as they became the first African side to book a place at the World Cup in Qatar.Ā

Ghana advance to the finals on the away goals rule after the first leg finished goalless on Friday, and will take part in their fourth World Cup after appearing in three in a row between 2006 and 2014.Ā Ā Ā

The visitors took the lead at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on 10 minutes when Partey's speculative shot from outside the penalty-box squirmed under home goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who should have made a comfortable save.

More fancied Nigeria equalised via a penalty as Denis Odoi clattered into Ademola Lookman in the box, and William Troost-Ekong's thunderous spot-kick nestled in the top corner, but they could not find the winner they needed.

Nigeria had qualified for six of the previous seven World Cups dating back to the United States in 1994, and their absence from this year's tournament will spark an inquest from the country's football authorities.

But for Ghana, and their newly appointed technical advisor Chris Hughton, it is a major triumph in a qualification campaign in which they never really impressed and had looked a shadow of the side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010.

They defended for much of the 90 minutes in Abuja, rarely looking threatening after they scored, but also faced few alarms themselves from a Nigeria side devoid of attacking threat.

Nigeria thought they had a second when Victor Osimhen scored, but the VAR correctly ruled he was offside in the build-up.

Emmanuel Dennis headed wide for the home side in the second half and Osimhen sent a bicycle-kick past the post, but it was largely comfortable for Ghana in the closing stages as they held on to the dismay of most of the 60,000 supporters in Abuja.Ā Ā

Later on Tuesday, Karl Toko Ekambi scored a 124th-minute winner as Cameroon sensationally booked their place at the World Cup in Qatar with a 2-1 victory over hosts Algeria in their playoff tie at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker on Tuesday.

Algeria looked to have booked their place when Ahmed Touba netted with three minutes remaining at the end of extra-time, but as Cameroon pushed everyone forward for the final play of the game, Toko Ekambi latched onto a loose ball to net a most unlikely winner.

The victory on the away goals rule seals an eighth World Cup finals appearance for the Indomitable Lions and follows a 1-0 win for Algeria in the first leg on Friday that left them heavy favourites to advance.

It seals a disastrous few months for the north African side who were dumped out of the Africa Cup of Nations finals, ironically played in Cameroon, in the first round in January as they gave up the title they won in 2019.Ā Ā

Morocco also qualified after Azzedine Ounahi netted a double as they overcame first-half injuries to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-1 in the second leg of their playoff on Tuesday.

Morocco advanced 5-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in Kinshasa in Friday's first leg and will compete at the finals for a sixth time.

Tarik Tissuoadali and Achraf Hakimi scored the other goals for Morocco, who were 2-0 up at halftime despite losing defender Jawad El Yamiq after six minutes to a muscle injury and having to take off goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, suffering from concussion after twice being hit on the head in aerial duels, in the 43rd.

Substitute Ben Malongo netted a consolation for the Congolese with a shot on the turn from the edge of the penalty box that was the pick of the night's efforts.

Incredible encounter

It may not have been a goal-fest, but that was an enthralling affair from start to finish.

Mane has come back to haunt Egypt again just two months after breaking their hearts at AFCON, ending an unusual shootout by stroking home from the spot to book Senegal's ticket to Qatar.

Senegal fans have invaded the pitch to celebrate with their heroes, who are being rushed away by security. Remarkable night.

20:54
Mane scores: Senegal win 3-1 on penalties

It's deja vu as Sadio Mane tucks home the winning penalty against Egypt to send Senegal to the World Cup!

The Liverpool winger slams his effort straight down the middle and wheels away in jubilation.

He was the hero in the AFCON final and takes on that role once again in the World Cup playoffs. Penny for the thoughts of Reds team-mate Salah...

20:51
Mohamed misses: Senegal 2-1 Egypt

Mendy keeps out Mohamed to leave the hosts on the brink of victory! If they score next Senegal are on their way to Qatar.

What on earth is going on?! Zizo sends his attempt wide of Mendy's left post and we're still yet to see someone find the back of the net. Crazy.

20:46
Ciss misses: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

This shootout has got off to a woeful start, with El Shenawy getting down to his right to deny Ciss. We're still waiting for a successful spot-kick.

20:45
Salah misses: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

Salah then steps up for Egypt and blazes his shot over the bar! Incredible stuff.

20:44
Koulibaly misses: Senegal 0-0 Egypt

The Senegal captain misses! Egypt draw first blood as El Shenawy tips his effort onto the crossbar.

20:43
Senegal up first

It's the hosts who will get us started in this shootout. Koulibaly is the first man up for Senegal.

20:39
Full time

It's full time in extra time, and that means Senegal and Egypt will settle the latest instalment of their gripping rivalry via the lottery of penalties again.

Senegal had some glorious opportunities, particularly in the first half of that 30-minute period, but as is usually the case both sets of teams seemed to be thinking of penalties as it drew to a close.

They will now devise their spot-kick orders and gear up for a crucial moment in their respective countries' history. So much is riding on this!

20:36
123 mins: Yellow card

Meanwhile, Nabil Emad also enters the book.

20:36
122 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Another Egypt player goes down and again the stretchers are rushed back out. Pharaohs stars aren't best pleased and urge them to get off the field.

20:34
Two minutes

Two minutes of added time in extra time. Penalties are almost upon us!

20:34
119 mins: Yellow card

Amid the substitution, Mohamed picks up a booking for a protest which is currently a bit of a mystery.

20:33
118 mins: Egypt change

The stretchers are out once more but this time they are well required, as Hamdi Fathi appears to be knocked out cold after taking a knee to the head from Matar Sarr. He is therefore replaced by Mahmoud Alaa.

Let's hope the medical team can work their magic there and ensure Fathi emerges unscathed.

20:27
114 mins: Senegal change

A knackered Idrissa Gueye hobbles off and is replaced by Pape Matar Sarr.

20:26
113 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Fattoh is down for Egypt and the stretchers are back out. The physios have covered quite a lot of ground themselves tonight.

Despite being escorted off the field, Fattoh is shortly able to re-enter the fray.

20:24
111 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Sarr wins a free-kick for the hosts over on the right-hand side and it is taken quickly, but Gueye's shot from distance is skied well over the bar. Waste.

20:21
108 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Pape Gueye almost edges Senegal in front, driving a lethal low effort narrowly wide of the post at the start of this second half.

20:18
Second half

Here we go then, the second half of extra-time begins. Will we get a dramatic winner?

20:17
Extra time interval

The half-time whistle sounds in extra time and we're now set for a short break before the final 15 minutes.

The dreaded thought of penalties will be creeping into both sets of players' minds...

20:15
Ghana through

Elsewhere, Ghana have booked their place in Qatar thanks to the away-goal rule.

Partey's strike for the Black Stars proved the difference in their 1-1 draw with Nigeria, who were unable to edge themselves in front.

20:09
99 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Koulibaly pings a brilliant long pass over to Mane on the left flank and the Liverpool star's cross flies dangerously across Egypt's box before going out for a throw-in.

Senegal are well and truly on top here. Egypt desperately need to take the sting out of this game.

20:06
96 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Three big chances in the space of a minute for Senegal!

El Shenawy has just made a string of incredible saves; first keeping the hosts out from back-to-back corners, before getting down brilliantly to deny Sarr a simple tap-in from close range.

Sensational from the Egypt goalkeeper.

20:00
Extra time

Egypt kick us off in extra time. Buckle up for another 30 minutes of action!

19:57
Full time

The 90 minutes is over and we're now set for another half-hour of extra time in this fascinating World Cup qualifier.

Senegal started the second half brightly, before Zizo's introduction sparked life into the visitors.

Almost two months since Senegal prevailed on penalties in the Africa Cup Of Nations final, these two nations are 30 minutes away from settling another tie from the spot.

19:54
92 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Sarr puts an inviting cross into the box and Cisse's attempt at a header goes wide. The hosts are ramping up the pressure late on.

19:53
Three minutes

We've got three minutes of added time here in Senegal before extra-time is upon us. Can anyone find a last-gasp winner?

19:49
87 mins: Yellow card

Senegal manager Cisse goes into the book now for protesting an Egypt free-kick too animatedly on the touchline.

19:47
80 mins: Nigeria 1-1 Ghana (1-1)

As things stand, Ghana are heading to the World Cup on away goals, with their tie against Nigeria still locked at 1-1.

19:45
82 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Sarr misses a HUGE chance to book Senegal's place at the World Cup!

Mane plays a clever ball to release the Watford winger through on goal, but he runs one on one with the goalkeeper and sends his effort wide.

That was a massive, massive moment in this playoff.

19:43
81 mins: Senegal changes

Senegal make two more changes as N.Mendy makes way for Cheikhou Kouyate and Dia is replaced by Pape Gueye

19:39
77 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Koulibaly gives away an unnecessary corner, clearing behind despite the ball heading straight into the hands of Mendy.

Egypt fail to make anything count from the resulting corner, but it eventually finds Zizo back on the left-hand side... and the substitute comes close again!

The midfielder weaved his way into the box and sent his shot narrowly wide. He's making a difference for Egypt here.

19:34
71 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

The visitors almost draw level as Salah curls in a delightful ball straight to the head of substitute Zizo, whose effort whistles past Mendy's left post.

Best chance yet for Egypt.

19:32
70 mins: Egypt changes

There are three more substitutions for Egypt; Trezeguet, Mohamed Elneny and Marmoush are off, with Zizo, Nabil Emad, Mostafa Mohamed on.

19:30
68 mins: Senegal change

The hosts make their first change as Bouna Sarr is replaced by Bamba Dieng.

19:28
66 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Senegal are awarded the most dangerous free-kick of the game so far, only for Gueye to send his attempt at goal from the edge of the D over the bar.

19:24
63 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Salah loses the ball on the halfway line and Senegal break, with Sarr finding Mane on the edge of the box.

Mane drives forward, moves to his left and pulls the trigger, but his shot is blocked.

19:17
55 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

After an unsuccessful Egypt free-kick, Senegal burst down the other end and feel they should have a penalty when Dia goes down in the box twice.

Mane is leading the Senegal protests, but the referee is not having any of it.

19:15
52 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

First big chance of the game for Egypt as Ahmed Fattoh is released through on goal, but his shot is kept out by Mendy and the ball eventually goes behind for a goal kick.

Fattoh remains on the floor after going down under a challenge, and following a brief VAR check for a potential red card - with a possible Senegal elbow assessed - and a slight skirmish between the two teams we're back underway.

The second half has started just as wildly as the first ended.

19:07
Second half

The teams are back out and Senegal have got the second half underway. Big 45 minutes coming up.

18:54
Half-time

I think we all need a lie down after that opening 45 minutes.

It was frantic from the first whistle up until the last; we've had fouls, injuries, objects thrown from the crowd, lasers, bust-ups, chances... albeit only one goal so far!

Senegal got it and will feel the happier of the two sides heading into the break. Egypt grew into it, but the hosts were more threatening and will fancy their chances of adding another after the interval.

18:50
45 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

And the African champions have come close again!

It was a superb, free-flowing move from Senegal which started in their own penalty area and ended with Egypt's Amr El Soleya clearing the ball narrowly over his own crossbar.

They've created the better chances in this first half by a country mile.

18:45
42 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Senegal almost add a second to move themselves ahead on aggregate, with Nampalys Mendy unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the box just past the post.

18:44
40 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

The visitors are upping the ante here, and after earning a corner Marmoush overhits an effort to the back post. Senegal then clear and eventually win a throw-in.

Frustrating half for Egypt so far, but they've certainly grown into it.

18:40
38 mins: Yellow card

Gueye picks up a booking for a late challenge on Omar Marmoush.

18:39
37 mins: Egypt change

Egypt are forced into another early change here as the injured Rabia comes off for Emam Ashour.

18:37
34 mins: Yellow card

Rabia is the first man to go into the book tonight after bringing down Sarr on the touchline.

18:35
32 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

The hosts dispossess Egypt and embark on a counter-attack, but Ismaila Sarr's looping effort from the edge of the box is collected comfortably by El Shenawy.

18:32
28 mins: Egypt change

Egypt have been forced into an early substitution, with Omar Gaber leaving the field on a stretcher. Ayman Ashraf replaces him.

18:30
26 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Pape Abou Cisse's brilliant long ball releases Mane through on goal, only for the Liverpool man to handle the ball when attempting to control it.

18:26
GOAL! 22 mins: Nigeria 1-1 Ghana (1-1)

Meanwhile, Nigeria have equalised in their playoff against Ghana, with William Troost-Ekong scoring from the penalty spot.

18:22
19 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Egypt advance into the opposition box for the first time, but Trézéguet is unable to keep the ball in play and the brief chance goes begging.

While Senegal are still looking pretty comfortable here, their early onslaught has faded slightly.

18:18
14 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Unsavoury scenes as Egypt goalkeeper El Shenawy is struck by a water bottle from the home crowd after diving to collect the ball near the byline. A green laser is also being shined on visiting players and coaches.

18:15
GOAL! 10 mins: Nigeria 0-1 Ghana (0-1)

Over in the other early CAF World Cup qualifier, Ghana have taken the lead away at Nigeria. Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has given the visitors liftoff.

18:13
11 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

Egypt need to weather a storm here early on. Senegal have started like a house on fire and the atmosphere is electric. They're up for this!

18:10
7 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

As Senegal give away a foul right by the touchline, the two managers are letting their tempers boil over already.

Senegal boss Aliou Cisse is pulled away from Egypt counterpart Queiroz in the end. A fiery start here in Diamniadio.

18:07
GOAL! 3 mins: Senegal 1-0 Egypt (1-1)

What a start for Senegal!

The hosts launch an instant attack and earn a foul on the left of Egypt's penalty area when Ciss is brought down by Ramy Rabia.

Idrissa Gueye then whips in the subsequent free-kick, which is cleared straight to the feet of Boulaye Dia, who scrambles the ball past Mohammed El Shenawy and into the back of the net.

We're level on aggregate already!

18:03
Kick-off

Peep peep! Egypt kick us off here in Senegal as this crucial playoff begins.

17:57
Here we go

Both teams have emerged from the tunnel and we will now listen to their respective national anthems before getting the ball rolling.

17:50
10 minutes to go

Here's your 10-minute warning before this World Cup qualifier gets underway in Senegal! Not long now.

17:49
Advantage Egypt

It is Egypt who hold the narrowest of leads heading into tonight's decider after Ciss' own goal in the first leg.

Remember, they can also take advantage of the away-goal rule here. If they were to open the scoring this evening, Senegal would need three...

17:42
Fever pitch

An incredible atmosphere is building inside the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade. Huge night in store for Senegal.

And this is the Egypt side for tonight's second leg. Salah, of course, spearheads the attack for Carlos Queiroz.

17:35
Senegal team news

Here is Senegal's starting line-up this evening, with Liverpool ace Sadio Mane getting the nod and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the sticks.

17:33
Welcome!

Good evening and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of Tuesday's World Cup qualifying playoff between Senegal and Egypt.

Mohamed Salah and Co take a slender lead into tonight's decider out in Diamniadio, having claimed a 1-0 win in Friday's first leg thanks to Saliou Ciss' own goal.

Nevertheless, Senegal will be hoping to make their home advantage count in the all-important second leg, which gets underway at 6pm.

A place in this year's World Cup in Qatar is at stake here, meaning it should make for a cracking tie between the 2022 Africa Cup Of Nations finalists.

We will also be on hand with updates from Nigeria vs Ghana (0-0), which begins at the same time over in Abuja.
