"With an impressive resume from his days proudly fronting Deep Purple before the group's demise in the late-'70s, David Coverdale stepped out with swagger as the point man of Whitesnake. After years of striking gold in the European market, Whitesnake finally hit it big, breaking out in America in 1984, on the strength of the accessible Slide It In album. Despite a revolving door of backing personnel, Coverdale and company thrived on a steady diet of infectious blues-based rockers and moving ballads, which carried over with venom from the stage. Once Cov's commandos broke out in the U.S., there was no holding back. Whitesnake was more than the proto-typical '80s hair band, as Coverdale surrounded himself with incredibly talented guitarists down through the years. While the mega-production, late-'80s recordings from Whitesnake garner much of the attention, in which a bombastic Led Zeppelin vibe was prevalent, there is so much more to Whitesnake's legacy than the video-enhanced 'Tawny Years'."
