The powerful Marvel villain Doctor Doom might not be a Green Lantern, but his indomitable willpower may expose a critical flaw in the way the Corps recruits its members.

The Green Lantern Corps only recruits the most capable beings in the universe. Those who possess great willpower and the ability to overcome fear are prime candidates for the Corps. Iron wills are the organization's most necessary trait of its members because that's the only way to unlock the powers of a Green Lantern's Power Ring. By focusing their wills and using a bit of imagination, a Green Lantern can create constructs of anything they dream up. While a Green Lantern can operate their weapon with the bare minimum of willpower required, those with excessive will like Hal Jordan or John Stewart can realize the Power Ring's truest potential.

But when willpower is discussed, there's one character in the Marvel Universe who absolutely eclipses any Green Lantern. Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, is an impressive specimen when it comes to the resilience he displays. From fighting Thanos to mastering powerful arcane magics, Doom has shown time and time again how he can readily take on any challenge. The Marvel Comics' villain put on his greatest display of will in Avengers: Emperor Doom by David Michelinie, Mark Gruenwald, Jim Shooter and Bob Hall. Doom has captured Zebediah Killgrave, aka the Purple Man, and restrains him in a device to use his mind-controlling abilities to take over the world. Irate at being held prisoner and having his powers stolen, Killgrave tells Doom he doesn't deserve to rule the world. In response, Doom removes his protective armor and confronts the Purple Man face to face. Amazingly, Doom's willpower is so strong that Killgrave can't force him to do anything.

Doctor Doom Purple Man Marvel Comics

Few people have the resolve necessary to resist the Purple Man’s powers, but if anyone would, it would be Doctor Doom. Such an exhibition of willpower proves that Victor would undoubtedly have what it takes to wield a Green Lantern's Power Ring. And yet, such determination shows that there's an ironic flaw about the Green Lantern Corps. Namely, that too much willpower is a bad thing. The Corps is no stranger to officers with powerful wills, but even they’ve had their fair share of bad apples in their history. The greatest example of this involves Sinestro. Sinestro used the Green Light to keep his home planet under an iron grip. Unfortunately, the Green Lantern Power Rings don't seek out moral fortitude when they're actively looking for recruits, just people with powerful wills. This is an alarming oversight because as Doom shows here, he's probably one possesses one of the most powerful wills in all of existence and, on paper, would be a great recruit. But with his desire to conquer the world, he would be the last person who should ever get his hands on a Power Ring.

The Green Lanterns might want powerful wills in their corps, but as Marvel’s Doctor Doom shows, maybe their standards should be a bit more exclusive.
