The most important cities with the largest number of inhabitants are Tirana, Durrës and Elbasan, all three with more than 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Vlorë, Shkodër and Pogradec. Berat and Gjirokastër, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are sparsely populated.

There are 74 cities in Albania with this status. The capital and largest city of Albania is Tirana. The country’s second largest city and main port is Durrës.
Many of the Albanian cities are still on the site of ancient Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine or Ottoman cities, so traces of their foundation can be seen in their historic centres. During a tourist trip, it is not always the main cities that are visited, as it is often the villages that condense the historical or natural heritage.
In Tirana, the main monuments are located around Skanderberg Square, while in Durrës, in addition to the beaches, the amphitheatre is a highlight. Elbasan is the third largest city in Albania. Vlorë, also on the Albanian coast, is home to the Muradije Mosque, the Independence Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Orthodox Zvernec Monastery. Shkodër, the former capital in 1920, closes the list of the five largest cities in terms of population. Other cities worth mentioning are Korçë, Fier, Berat and Gjirokastër.
