Hi TA members,

Hope you're doing well. I'm from NSW and I read Tassie are planning to let visitors in from Dec 17?

My husband and I (35 & 37) are looking forward to visiting the Cradle Mountain & Launceston for 5-6 nights in December (Dec 27 - Jan 2). We can add a few more days if necessary.

As expected, the accommodation at CM is all booked out months in advance. We will have to base ourselves in Launceston CBD or close to it. My questions are:

1) Would you recommend travelling to/fro CM - Launceston and do day treks? We're quite active and love hiking, so we're happy to visit multiple times, at least 2.

2) Not a big fan of the tours and want to pick a trail and trek on our own. It'll be very helpful to know which tracks can be conveniently covered as a day trip from Launceston.

3) Lastly, regarding transport to get up there, is it safe to drive in Summer. We can rent a car and have driven around NSW but this will be the first drive up rugged roads. Coach option - I also saw the overland track bus company that runs a coach from Launceston, reaching CM at 9.15 AM. But looks like they only have a bus back that leaves CM at 2.30 PM 0r 3.00 PM (so seems like half-day). Would you happen to know other options that may leave later than that?

I have come across information on a few treks here, we'd really love to do the 6-8 hour trek but it may not be possible given the coach times.

Thank you so much for your help, in advance.

Hi,

If you can't stay at Cradle Mountain you need to stay as close as possible. You are wasting your time and money travelling from Launceston it's too far and you'll miss the nocturnal wildlife endemic to the area.

It's safe to drive in Tassy.

Cheers,

It's close to a 2.5 hour drive each way from Launceston to Cradle. That's why the bus timings are what they are.

Just about everyone else drives there, so it should be safe for any competent driver.

If you can't get accommodation at Cradle, start looking further afield. Places like Moina, Cethana, Mount Roland, Sheffield, Railton and Tullah should be the next places you look. Try AirBnB and Stayz as there are not many motels in that neck of the woods. These places are generally within one hour.

The best full day walk, IMO, is from Ronny Creek up to Marion's Lookout, then back via Dove Lake. You need to use the shuttle to get to Ronny Creek and back from Dove Lake. Depending on your fitness and experience, you could also tackle the summit.

At that time of year there will not be any trails at Cradle where you are on your own.

You need a pass to enter the Park and to use the shuttle (which is mandatory). For two people for one day, the Icon Pass is best. For more than one day, a Holiday Pass is cheapest. Parks Pass info here: https://passes.parks.tas.gov.au/

It's really too far from Launceston for day trips, and the bus service won't work. If you want to get a bit closer, try Deloraine or Ulverstone, which seem to have some limited vacancies for 28th to 30th. They are still a fair distance away, but possibilities if you get up early. Remember the roads in are winding, and therefore slow. It also depends on whether you car hire a car - check that first.

Brilliant suggestions - Noted about the pass, transfer, best walk and basing ourselves closer-by (Thanks so much for the location suggestions, will make the accom hunt so much easier.)

I'm looking at self-drive itineraries using a rental car and would like to tour more of the beautiful Tas - Would there be a link to sample itineraries somewhere on TAS forum that you could kindly re-direct me to? (I've visted Hobart & wine-glass bay a couple of times) :)

Thanks again, You all are incredible!

In the FAQs for the Launceston forum (top right on a pc, not a mobile phone), there is one called Touring in Tasmania, which will give you some suggested routes. But with only 5-6 nights, you can maybe only visit one or maybe two places other than Cradle Mountain.

Thank you :) I'll take a look and add in days if accom is available. Also, update: I managed to book Cradle Mtn Hotel for 20-22 Dec, I'm over the moon & so happy that they had availability haha. So, the topic of this post has now gone from best treks to/fro CM to whilst staying on CM for 2 days :)

Any suggestion for the 2nd day trek?

Can't help with your question but have you booked a hire car already?

I'd do that first.

They can be hard to find..and exy as well.

As well as the Dove Lake walk there are a number of short walks new the rangers station at the entrance to the park.

If you have the time look at doing the devils@cradle experience.

The Marion's Lookout hike takes you to the western side of Dove Lake. You could do another to the eastern side up past Lake Hanson to Lake Rodway and back along the twisted Lake track.
