Where is Phil Neville now?

Former Premier League and England international defender Phil Neville retired from playing at the end of 2012-13 after eight seasons playing for Everton.

One of the famous ‘Class of 92‘ group of players that came through the youth system at Manchester United he finished his career having made 689 first-team appearances winning a number of trophies during his time at Old Trafford including six Premier League titles, three FA Cup wins and a UEFA Champions League trophy.

On the international front he won 59 caps for the England senior side and was a member of the 1996, 2000 and 2004 UEFA European Championships squads.

Whilst still a registered player with Everton, Neville took his first steps into coaching in 2012 when he assisted the England under-21’s side in a European Championship qualifier.

Continuing his work with the young England side, he was a member of the coaching staff that took them to the 2013 UEFA European Under-21’s Championships where they unfortunately lost all three of their group games.

Having previously been considered for the England under-20’s manager’s role, Neville was interviewed for the vacant Everton managerial position before making a return to Old Trafford in 2013 to link up with his former manager David Moyes as a first team coach.

After Moyes was sacked and replaced with Louis van Gaal, Neville was unfortunately deemed surplus to requirements and left the club to start a new career working in the media.

Working predominantly for the BBC across their various football programmes as well as Sky Sports as a pundit and match analyst, Neville had to put a hold on his media work when he was appointed as assistant manager at Spanish side Valencia in 2015.

Working with his brother Gary who had been appointed as head coach, their Valencia side endured a terrible run of results which ultimately led to the dismissal of the older Neville. Phil stayed on in Spain where his son was playing for a local academy side that Neville also coached at.

In January 2018 Neville made a return to football coaching when he was appointed as the England national women’s team and enjoyed success on the pitch finishing second in the 2018 She Believes Cup and then having an underfeated 2019 FIFA World Cup qualifiying campaign. They also went a stage further in the 2019 She Believes Cup with a 3-0 win over Japan in the final to become champions.

Off of the back of this success Nevilles side entered the World Cup with bags of confidence and made it to the semi-finals where they were unfortunately defeated by eventual winners the United States.

In January 2021 he stepped down from his role with England to join David Beckham’s MLS side Inter Miami as head coach and had a successful first season reaching the MLS Cup play-offs.

However, a terrible start to the 2023/24 campaign saw Neville sacked by the club in June 2023 with the club bottom of the Eastern Conference after 15 games.

He wasn’t out of football for long though and just a week later joined the Canada national side as one of the first team coaches before joining current club Portland Timbers as head coach in November 2023.

Away from the football coaching and media work, Neville is co-owner of Salford City with former Manchester United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, David Beckham and his brother Gary. The ‘Class of 92‘ team-mates, have also opened a university called UA92 which is backed by Lancaster University and Trafford council.
