Two men have serious injuries after a shooting that took place just after midnight in Roanoke, police said.

The Roanoke Police Department said they received a shots fired report around 12:10 a.m. on November 30 near 24th Street NW.

"Responding officers did not immediately locate a scene or any evidence of a shooting in that area, so they began patrolling through nearby neighborhoods to locate the source of the calls," RPD said.

That's when an officer was flagged down by a resident in the 2400 block of Maryland Avenue NW, who said there was an injured person in a home in the neighborhood. RPD said the officer went into the home and found a man with what appeared to be serious gunshot wounds, and officers said they rendered first aid until Roanoke Fire-EMS could take him to the hospital.

Then RPD said units found another man on the front porch of a home on Staunton Avenue NW, also with a serious gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital too.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting occurred at the residence in the 2400 block of Maryland Ave NW. Evidence indicates that there was a verbal altercation that led to an exchange of gunfire," RFD said. "No charges have been placed at this time and this remains an ongoing investigation."
