Karlsruhe University of Education was established in its present form in 1962. Attended by 3.700 students and 180 researchers, the University provides a high standard in research and teaching in the field of education, with a focus on subject and age-group specific teaching and learning methodology as well as on educational processes in social, cultural and institutional contexts.

The University offers a teacher training programme for primary and lower-secondary school, including the "Europalehramt" (bilingual teaching) programme, which qualifies teachers to teach other specialist subjects in either French or English. In addition to the teacher training programmes, the University offers B.A. and M.A. programmes in the field of education as well as the possibility to carry out doctoral and post-doctoral research.

The profile of the institution as a whole emphasises European cultural studies, intercultural education, plurilingualism and media education. The University works closely with partner universities in many other countries and offers exchange opportunities for both students and lecturers.

Research at the University of Education includes both basic and applied approaches, with particular fields of interest in empirical education and school research as well as research in teaching methodology for individual school subjects.

The Gender Equality Representative is a permanent member of different committees at the University of Education and is responsible for upholding the equal status of women and men. She is also affiliated to the Conference of Equal Opportunities Officers in Baden-Württemberg.

Furthermore she functions as a contact person for questions regarding equality and if needed she offers advice to students and colleagues on topics such as studying with children, for example giving guidance to student-parents on how they can best organise their studies.

In the past few years Karlsruhe University of Education has been working on becoming a family friendly institution. After being certified as a ‘family friendly university’ by the ‘berufundfamilie GmbH’ in 2006, Karlsruhe University of Education has been an official partner of the Karlsruhe alliance for families since 2009.

Karlsruhe University of Education offers a wide range of academic programmes leading to professions in education. This includes initial degree programmes leading to a first university degree as well as master, add-on, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

Teacher training Bachelor’s as well as Master’s degrees can be studied consecutively at Karlsruhe University of Education. Due to the polyvalent character of the bachelor’s programmes, students obtain a first professional qualification (bachelor’s degree) which can then lead to either a teacher training master’s programme or any other professional master’s programme.

Having successfully completed the Bachelor’s programme, students can reflect on their choice of study and opt for a non-teaching career if they prefer.
