This contract will see him stay for at least five more seasons with Real Madrid, which means till 30th June 2026.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper’s transfer to Real Madrid had taken place three years back, in 2018, when Courtois did not appear for training, just before the season started which left Chelsea bereft of a shot-stopper. Of course, the writing was on the wall for him, in regards to this transfer, as he has expressed interest in going to Madrid since 2017. He had said that he missed his wife and kid who lived there but reiterated his loyalty to staying at Chelsea, in March of 2018 but what came later was shocking. He left the club forcefully, leaving a sour taste in many Chelsea fans mouths. Chelsea had to scamper and buy Kepa Arizzabalaga for €80m. Chelsea wanted time to replace him but the act had already been committed.

Meanwhile, Courtois didn’t exactly have the smoothest of starts with Real Madrid and didn’t have a great first season, conceding 46 goals. Real Madrid, themselves, came 3rd and was knocked out by Ajax in the Champions League.

He won the Zamora trophy for the best goalkeeper, next season and helped Madrid win the LaLiga title 2019-20. He was turning out one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Madrid. This season continued as he had 17 clean sheets throughout the season and was nominated by the UEFA for the Best Goalkeeper Award.

With his new contract extension, he hopes that this form continues and he has to, as Real Madrid is an unforgiving place to fail.
