Every entertainment buff knows how the one saga perfectly connected to Ridley Scott’s name is the Alien franchise. And that is only understandable, considering how this very film series is still regarded as his best one, even after being originated almost four and a half decades ago, in 1979. That said, the filmmaker has his own favorite movie from the saga too!
But his favorite is a lot different than what many may expect to be. This is because even though Scott’s peer and fellow mastermind James Cameron is credited for creating the best film from this movie series (which is, notably, a rare feat in Hollywood), the filmmaker is still in incredible admiration of his original movie, i.e. the one that started the craze for this sci-fi cult classic.
Ridley Scott’s Favorite Alien Film is the Original One
For one who gave birth to the superhit franchise, Ridley Scott most certainly has a favorite film. And his favorite isn’t the same movie that a lot of other fans consider to be their favorite, i.e. the second installment of the film series.
At least that’s what he shared when asked about his opinions on the same during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. He said:
“There’s only ever the one. It’s like trying to do a sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Fundamentally, you can’t.”
This may come as a surprise to many, considering how James Cameron‘s sequel to the 1979 film is widely regarded as superior to the original and is even credited as a greatly rare feat to Cameron since not all sequels earn this respectable title in Hollywood.
Nonetheless, his answer can’t really be counterargued either, because of the excellent explanation that Scott followed his response with.
The Reason Why Ridley Scott Will Always Consider the Original the Most Superior
Truly, fans calling Cameron’s sequel from 1986 the best movie in the entire film series is a well-deserved title for that film most certainly surpassed a lot of expectations just like almost every other one from the mastermind director.
Yet, at the same time, Scott’s reason for considering the 1979 sci-fi cult classic masterpiece film the most superior isn’t unjust either.
As the filmmaker continued to justify in the interview:
“Really, with the greatest respect to Star Wars, the best film by far is the one that George (Lucas) directed, right? By miles. It was unique. It was absolutely wonderful to me. It was the fairy story of all fairy stories in space. And to follow through is a tough call. So, same with Alien.”
That said, it is only true that the original film of the sci-fi saga is unique and incomparable to any and every other movie from the film series or from the related ones. Guess we do understand the reason behind Scott’s iconic choice!
You can watch Alien on Hulu and Starz.
