Kent City boys shine at track state finals

COMSTOCK PARK - Kent City had just three runners qualify for Saturday's MHSAA Division 3 track and field finals.

It was quality over quantity as the Eagles won three individual events to earn the runner-up trophy at Comstock Park High School.

Albion won its second straight championship with 611⁄2 points, while Kent City finished with 43 points to tie O-K Silver rival Allendale for second place.

"I've been nervous all week," admitted junior Alex Wilson, who swept the distance races on Saturday.

"But this feels great. Not only the individual wins, but finishing second as a team, too."

Wilson won the 1,600-meter run in 4:17.82 and the 3,200 run in 9:25.40, while sophomore Isaac Austin  won the pole vault by clearing 14-6.

Logan Howe finished second in the 100-meter dash and was fourth in the long jump.

"We weren't really concerned with the team scores," said KC head coach Jeff Wilson. "Today, it was about focusing on improving individual times and the guys did a great job."

Mason County Central's boys 3,200-meter relay team also earned all-state honors with a runner-up finish.

Division 1

East Kentwood finally broke is second-place string.

The host Falcons won the state championship with 79 points - easily outdistancing runner-up DeWitt (34).

EK finished second the last two years.

Division 2

Hamilton won the boys Division 2 meet at Zeeland with 61 points, while defending champion Williamston was second.

Fruitport's Jacob Batch posted the top area finish with a fourth-place performance in the 3,200-meter run. Spring Lake's Mike Latsch (300 hurdles) and Whitehall's 3,200-meter relay team each finished eighth.

Division 4

After 12 years without a track program, the Muskegon Catholic Central made a big return to the state finals at Forest Hills Eastern.

The Crusaders placed in five events to finish third with 34 points. Potterville won the team championship with 64.

MCC's 800-meter relay team of Major Metcalf, D'Ante Foster, Jared Johnson and Steve Mitchell earn top honors with a time of 1:31.94. Rodney Anderson replaced Foster on the runner-up 400 relay team.

Johnson was second in the 200-meter dash (23.31), Mitchell was third in the 100 at 11.30 and the 1,600-meter relay team was seventh.

Hesperia's Dakota Cooper was sixth in the 800-meter run; Mike Hamilton was seventh in the 300 hurdles; and Matt Peacock finished eighth in the 3,200-meter run.

Ravenna's Matt Vanderwal took third in the long jump, while White Cloud's Nate Schmitt was fifth in the discus.
