Crosspoint baseball claims district championship, soccer teams aim for state on Saturday
Crosspoint's baseball team used a three-run first inning to propel itself to the Class 1B West Central/Northwest Bi-District championship Thursday at Valley Ridge Park in Seattle.
Sam Dykstra finished with three hits — including a two-run home run — and three RBI as the Warriors knocked off Mount Vernon Christian 7-5. Dykstra's two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the winning margin for Crosspoint (19-1). Silas Stenerson added three RBI while Thunderr Doty picked up the victory after allowing four runs on seven hits through five innings. He struck out six and walked two.
State tournament seeding committees are scheduled to meet Sunday, at which point Crosspoint will learn its next opponent. Teams qualifying for state must win a pair of regional games May 21 in order to advance to the final four. The state semifinals are May 27 and championship games are May 28.
Three Olympic League teams were knocked out of West Central/Southwest Bi-District 2A tournament play Thursday. Olympic (11-10) lost to Port Angeles 7-5; Bremerton (8-10) fell to Highline 5-3; and Kingston (7-9) lost to White River 16-1.
North Kitsap (18-2) plays in the district semifinals Saturday at 1 p.m. against Steilacoom at Central Kitsap High School. The Vikings, who have already qualified for state, need a victory to advance to the district championship game at 4 p.m. Fife and Enumclaw play in the other district semifinal game.
Klahowya's baseball team (15-4) headed into Friday's West Central/Southwest Bi-District 1A title game against Bellevue Christian needing to win in order to secure a state tournament berth. A loss would send the Eagles into a winner-to-state, loser-out game Saturday at Foss High School at 10 a.m. against either Cascade Christian or Vashon Island.
Boys soccer teams still kicking
One West Sound boys soccer team, Bainbridge, has already clinched a state tournament berth. Three others can qualify for state with victories on Saturday.
North Kitsap (12-4) outlasted Highline in a penalty kick shootout Thursday to advance in the West Central/Southwest Bi-District 2A tournament. The Vikings and Pirates found themselves tied 4-4 at the end of regulation and overtime.
North Kitsap plays at Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. Franklin Pierce won a 2-1 game against Kingston (7-10) on Thursday to knock the Buccaneers out of the playoffs.
Bremerton (12-6) knocked off Renton 2-1 in penalty kicks Thursday. Sebastian Burdick scored in regulation for the Knights, who host White River on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.
Central Kitsap (13-4-1) lost 3-1 to Auburn Riverside on Thursday in West Central/Southwest Bi-District 3A tournament play, but the Cougars play Kent Meridian at Stadium Bowl on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.
In the 3A district title game, Bainbridge (17-3) fell against Stadium 1-0. The Spartans already had a state berth locked up and will learn their first-round opponent Sunday.
South Kitsap girls leading district track and field meet
South Kitsap's girls track and field team found itself in first place Thursday after the opening day of the South Puget Sound League 4A championships at Bethel High School.
The Wolves amassed 60 points to lead the meet, which concludes Saturday.
Savannah Kambich, Marissa Crane, Elise Hopper and Ella Hopper combined to win the 4x100 relay (49.24 seconds) and the 4x200 relay titles (1:43.06). Ella Hopper also captured the 400 title in 57.49 seconds (Crane took third, Elise Hopper fifth and Kambich seventh).
Grace Degarimore won the discus event with a throw of 119-4.
