We don’t rebuild, we just reload. One of the more popular sayings of successful high school sports programs. But it’s easier said than done. Few high school wrestling programs are more capable of pushing the reload button than East High. Thunderbird Nation hosted the annual Charlie Lake Wrestling on December 11-12, as 24 teams rolled into town, hunting team and individual titles. On Saturday, three Thunderbirds led the way. Freshman Liam Fox announced his arrival in the high school ranks by taking the 132-pound bracket. Senior Gavyn Aumiller battled through an injured knee to take the 285-pound crown, while fellow senior Dominic Lopez took a loss in the 195-pound class championship match. Fox posted three falls before defeating Lingle-Fort Laramie’s Kaleb Brothwell by a 14-5 major decision in the finals. Aumiller limped into the heavyweight championship match, but dominated and pinned Eaton’s Lucas Cass at the 3:22 mark and claim the 285-pound Charlie Lake crown. Aumiller suffered a knee injury in the semifinals against Burns-Pine Bluffs’ Cody Winslow. Lopez finished second in the 195-pound bracket, falling to Thompson Valley’s Ronan Bittner, who scored on a takedown with 23 seconds left to take the 3-2 win. Other notable T-Bird medal winners were Cade Pugh’s third place finish at 160 pounds, and Colby Olson’s third place finish at 170. East finished fourth with a team score of 123.5. Central was eighth with 84 points, and Cheyenne South finished 22nd with 19 points. Eaton, Colorado, placed first with 139 points.

Apparently, nothing motivates high school students to give to their community like the chance to cover a teacher and a principal in slime live on the school announcements. East High’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) club came up with the idea to hold a canned food drive and, to top it off, make it a contest. The reward for the club that donates the most cans is to slime their club adviser and the assistant principal Mr. David Haggerty. This idea took plenty of time, work and effort for the FFA students. “Our whole canned food drive event was put together by a few of our officers, mainly Savannah Whittecar, who had the great idea of getting the rest of the student body involved,” said junior Rachel Abraham, FFA Sentinel Lead. “[The hardest part of putting this event together] was trying to get clubs involved, as well as getting the boxes out to the clubs who wanted to participate.” Each participating club was given a box decorated with the club’s name and Christmas theme paper. Once the totals were tallied, and with an impressive $100 donation from the adviser’s own mother, East’s Speech and Debate club collected over 1,000 nonperishable food items and were declared the winners. Adviser Marcus Viney is proud of his group, but he’s not sure of the prize. “It’s mixed feelings,” said Viney. “I feel really proud that they got so much food for people in need, but I also wonder if they just wanted to watch me suffer. I’m really excited. I used to watch Nickelodeon as a kid, and I’ve always kind of wanted to get slimed, and I never have, so it’s basically a childhood dream come true!” East collected over 1,800 cans and nonperishable food items to be donated to the Comea Shelter and the Salvation Army.

In a celebration of the Christmas season, the East High choir recently joined Governor Mark Gordon, his family, and other dignitaries at the Capitol Christmas tree lighting ceremony inside the Capitol building in downtown Cheyenne. The December 8 event focused on celebrating inclusion and the spirit of the season. “We sang a song called ‘Noel Sing Noel,’ and we sang ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’” said concert chorus senior Brock Huntington. “My favorite part was performing with the PALS kids from different schools.” The Governor, along with the First Lady, the Program for Adaptive Life Skills (PALS), including East High PALS students, and the ARC organization students, joined together to see the 20-foot-tall tree

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter is joining hundreds of animal shelters nationwide to help pets find homes this holiday season. The Bissell Pet Foundation is teaming up with shelters across the U.S. and Canada for its “Empty the Shelters — Holiday Hope” through December 20 with additional daily adoption appointments at the Shelter. Walk-in adoptions will be featured on Saturday, December 18, beginning at noon. The foundation will sponsor pet adoption fees, reducing them to $25 or less. If you have a question about an animal you’re interested in, be sure to double-check with the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. All adoptable pets are shown online at the Shelter’s website, www. cheyenneanimalshelter.org. Currently, adoption applications are required with an appointment to visit a pet with the exception of the December 18 open adoption day.

The American Legion Post 6 Oratorical contest which awards hundreds of dollars for scholarships to advance one’s education is to be held at 1:00pm on January 15, at the Post.
