KSTP-TV chief meteorologist Dave Dahl announced Thursday that he plans to retire at the end of the year after more than four decades at the Twin Cities television station.

Dahl, 66, who has been forecasting the weather for KSTP viewers since 1977, called it a “dream job” in a news release issued by the St. Paul-based station.

“It’s been an honor delivering the forecast to the people of Minnesota and Wisconsin each day, whether it was beautiful, or stormy, I’m grateful I was given the opportunity and cannot thank you enough!” Dahl said.

A Twin Cities native, Dahl attended the University of Minnesota and received his meteorology degree from Florida State University and was hired by KSTP right out of school.

Rob Hubbard, president of KSTP-owner Hubbard Television, said in the station’s news release that Dahl has played a vital role in serving our entire community.”

“Nobody in our state has done so much to help Minnesotans,” Hubbard said. “Whether planning a picnic or knowing when to take cover, Dave has positively impacted all of our lives.”

In 2012, Dahl went public with his skin cancer during a KSTP broadcast. The illness, which Dahl attributed to a childhood spent outdoors without wearing sunscreen, forced him to undergo a pair of surgeries.

On Twitter, Dahl’s KSTP co-worker Tom Hauser wished him well in retirement.

“The man has barely aged since we started working together 28 years ago,” Hauser tweeted. “Happy trails, Dave. Truly been an honor to work with someone I watched when I was in high school.”
