Eject Brain Now
For a band that, when push comes to shove, ran out of ideas before they finished writing their first song, this is still a pretty poor showing. The sheer volume of gawky clichéd lyrics multiplies the cringe factor several orders of magnitude, and combined with that curious "let's screw up this halfway decent song with some really bad keyboard sounds" production ethic of the mid 1980s, there is precious little left with which to get excited.

Opening track "Nothing Touches My World" is promising, but alas the band blow their wad way too early as it turns out, because the next decent song appears way down in position number seven - "Colour Your Answer Blue" - and even then this track is partially ruined with an awful "pan pipes" style keyboard riff. On the plus side, this song is not sung by lead vocalist Brian Mannix, so on this occasion the horrid DX7 is forgivable.

Sadly, much of the rest of the album is half-baked wretchedness. "I Am" features a lyric as corny as its dated chord progression: tired of trying, bored with lying, tired of crying, hair needs drying, fish are frying... you get the idea. "About You" is an unsuccessful attempt to recreate "50 Years" from the 'Cos Life Hurts album (but somehow they make it sound more like "Crazy for You" by Madonna than anything else), while other plodders like "Goodnight", "I'm on Heat" and "Don't Wake Me" are pointless and so lyrically lacking that to even quote them would require one to plumb such formidable depths as to need a mini submarine and a six man diving team.

Suffice it to say that if, as the album title suggests, what you give is actually what you get, my only response is that I must have somehow given the shopkeeper negative dollar bills when we made our transaction all those years ago, 'cos this record stinks!

I found this, on the whole, far more enjoyable than the band's previous release.(Cos' Life Hurst, 85) The highlights (and obvious hits, "Don't Wake Me" and "I Am") don't shine quite so bright, but neither do the low points sink quite so low. "About You" is the only track that I don't ever want to hear again. Brian Mannix's voice was clearly suffering from too many live performances or too much of something. But if you're a die-hard fan like me, you'll scour your 2nd hand record store -cd copies are extremely ultra-rare- all for the sake of hearing the 20-something blond spunkrat screaming out, "She thinks I'm on drugs, I'm on heat!"
