Abstract
Liu Ming-ch’uan’s departure from Formosa in 1891 was the signal for the march of ‘Nippon Seishin’. Shao Yu-lien, sent by Peking to administer the affairs of the island, was a weak man who cared more for the easy life than for maintaining the defences which Liu had built up. His successor T’ang Ching-sung, though possessing many admirable qualities, was not equal to the task of governorship.
