was a general that seized power of Mexico as a dictator. His cruelty during the Battle of the Alamo inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. His time in power is characterized by poor conditions for economic growth and development in Mexico.
Son of a Spanish citizen, he is known as the Father of Texas, he led the second, and ultimately successful, colonization of the region by bringing 300 families from the United States to the region in 1825. In addition, he worked with the Mexican government to support immigration from the United States.
After declaring their independence from the Republic of Mexico in 1836, the vast majority of Texas citizens favored the annexation of the Lone Star Republic by the United States. The Texas annexation was the 1845 incorporation of the Republic of Texas into the United States of America, which was admitted to the Union as the 28th state.
