WILLIAM H. LEWIS
William Henry Lewis was born in Chariton, Iowa, Oct. 23, 1873. He passed away at Rochester, Minn. the afternoon of Feb. 18, 1961, of a complication of ailments.
He grew to manhood at this place and was graduated from Chariton high school in 1890. He was married in Denver, Colo., Sept. 5, 1900, to Thekla M. Anderson, also of Chariton, and their home was established here. To this union two children were born: Raymond and Mildred.
For several years Mr. Lewis was engaged as a salesman at the J. T. Crozier store. In September, 1907 he engaged in the mercantile business at Woodburn, where the family resided until February, 1918, when they returned to Chariton and Mr. Lewis conducted a grocery for 15 years.
He was a member of the First Methodist church and was one of the first members of the Chariton Volunteer Fire Department. He had been affiliated with the Knights of Pythias for many years.
In January, 1952, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis left Chariton to make their home with their daughter, Mildred Lewis, at Rochester, Minn. In March, 1957, Mr. Lewis returned to Chariton and resided at Martha's Rest Home unitl Jan. 1 of this year, when he returned to Rochester.
Surviving are his daughter, Mildred of Rochester, a sister, Pearl A. Lewis, of Des Moines, and one grandson, Thomas W. Lewis, of Hutchinson, Kans.
He was preceded in death by his wife and son, Raymond, and three brothers, Horace, Edward and Don.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Feb. 21, 1961, at the Beardsley Funeral Home, the Rev. Lester Hall officiating. Interment was at the Chariton cemetery.
