Springfield Armory has announced the launch of the Prodigy AOS 9mm pistol, the first offering in the new 1911 DS double-stack line of pistols. The Prodigy, available in both 5-inch and 4.25-inch variants, enhances the proven 1911 platform with double-stack capacity and a performance-driven feature set.

Optics-ready with raised fiber-optic front/u-notch rear sights as well as an ambidextrous safety and Picatinny rail, at the heart of the 9mm Prodigy pistol is the expertly engineered double-stack magazine. Mounted to the pistol’s forged steel receiver is a polymer grip module that offers capacities of 17+1 in a flush-fit magazine and 20+1 in an extended one, both included with the Prodigy. An optional 26-round magazine is also available.

The polymer grip module features a wraparound Adaptive Grip Texture treatment, made popular on the Hellcat family of 9mm pistols. Matching up with this grip module and the forged steel receiver is a forged steel slide with forward serrations. Both it and the steel receiver feature a rugged black Cerakote finish. Housed within the slide is a match-grade bushingless forged stainless steel bull barrel.

Configured for today’s most demanding applications, the Prodigy is ready to accept a wide range of optical sights. Developed in collaboration with Agency Arms, the Prodigy employs AOS (Agency Optic System) plates designed exclusively for the 1911 DS. Machined from billet 17-4 stainless steel, the AOS plates come fitted with a rear sight and are designed specifically to preserve visible iron sights for an intuitive sight picture and instant target acquisition.

The pistol ships with a cover plate with rear sight as well as one optics-mounting plate designed for the HEX Dragonfly along with a variety of today’s most popular red dot optics. Additional plates designed to accept a wide range of today’s most popular optics are also available on the Springfield Armory Store. You can see a full fitment/optics compatibility chart for the AOS plate system here

“The new Prodigy 9mm, the first in our new family of 1911 double-stack pistols, takes everything that shooters love about the 1911 platform and enhances it with increased capacity and a host of performance features,” says Steve Kramer, Vice President of Marketing for Springfield Armory. “Combining cutting-edge capabilities with all the proven benefits of the 1911, the Prodigy is a must-have addition for any handgun enthusiast’s collection.”
