The train from Zurich to Milan follows the main north-south route through the Alps, cutting under the highest mountains through the Gotthard Tunnel. Opened in 2016, this impressive feat of engineering trimmed 40 minutes off the journey time from Zurich to Milan.
Despite the trans-Alpine nature of the journey, this is not a route known for its exceptional scenery. The prettiest sections are on the climb up to the north entrance of the Gotthard Tunnel.
